Chloe was a very unhappy little plant. She felt as though she would never grow to be as impressive as the other cacti in the desert and she was certainly no beautiful sunflower or majestic Douglas fir tree. She often lashed out in anger, hurting those around her. But one day, Chloe realized that she was scaring off potential friends by using her spines for poisonous purposes. She began to think that maybe they could be used to help her make friends instead.

Soon, Chloe began scaring off predators to protect small insects in her ecosystem. While she remained protective on the outside, she now understood that her poisonous spines were a strength, not a weakness. Although she appeared to be isolated to outsiders, from then on, Chloe knew what it meant to stand up for her friends.

Frank is a gigantic ponderosa tree with sharp looking pine needles. He scares everyone off by being so tall and strong. But in reality, Frank is quite the friendly giant. He is home to many insects, birds, and squirrels and provides humans with great beauty and awe with his size and colour. His pinecones allow the ecosystem to survive and he hopes one day to make the world a sustainable place. On a cool spring day, Frank saw a group of humans approach him, looking him up and down with saws in hand and machines behind them. They were contemplating the best way to cut Frank down in order to construct another building at UBC. To be continued...

Josh was the most popular Tree on all of UBC campus. He was strong, tall and confident, and all the other plants, Josh thought, wanted to be friends with him. However, Josh thought that he was too good for all the young Pines and small shrubs that surrounded him. One day, construction workers and big machines started to work around him. Day by day, the trees and plants that were by his side were replaced by concrete, and eventually new buildings. Josh became very sad and lonely, and he regretted not making friends with the forest that once surrounded him. One day, josh noticed young humans with suitcases arriving around the buildings. Soon he realized that these humans had moved in. He came to recognize each one, as they passed on their way to class and then back again in the evening. A fence with some benches was built around Josh, and many of the humans starting sitting beneath him to admire is strong trunk and big branches, breathing in and appreciating the fresh air that he created. Josh is no longer lonely, but is now the center of Ponderosa Residence.

Shirley was a bush. A bush that sought out the love and approval of others. Whenever rain would fall she would stare at the tiny reflection of herself in the spherical orb. She grew out her leaves but one day realized no one really cared. Without second thought she she decided to abandon her first round of leaves and started to grow out her second set. Her first layer of leaves withered and rotted but Shirley didn't care. She kept on growing out new leaves again again if she felt people's attention fading. Soon she was left with multiple layers of neglected leaves. This made her look even more awful than she did before. People never stopped by to stare at her or give a gentle touch. Shirley was still a bush, a needy and neglected bush.

Her looks made it easy for her to connect with others and make friends.

One day a terrible rain storm damaged her leaves and they became brown and droopy. She wasn't able to connect to passers by as she now went unnoticed. She realized that deeper friendships were valuable. She then went back to her other friends and they joined in a plant dance, appreciating each other's company. Sherry's leaves eventually came back to there wonderful green color. She made sure to include others in activities more often and appreciate others perspectives.

The trees bickered day and night, unable to agree on which of them was the most beautiful. One day, a storm unlike any they had experienced before swept through the campus, threatening to uproot them all. So, they decided to put aside their disagreements and link together to survive the storm. 10 years later, they remain more interwoven than ever.

He would stare at the sky and wish he could be a bird with their nice smooth feathers. One day a bird came and landed on one of Timmy's branches. Timmy was in awe! What a beautiful creature! If only Timmy could be that bird... Timmy asked the bird to tell him all about how it felt to be a bird so he could imagine it for a moment. The bird did not like that request, he said, "I am Kenny Crow and I don't answer to nobody!" Timmy was shocked, how could one of his favourite creatures, so amazing and majestic be so mean and rude?! Timmy decided he would rather be peely and lumpy and spotty if it meant being kind and happy.
