The idea of building this monument came in a very interesting way, from Serbian enemies at the First World War,the Austrian-Hungarian monarchie.Thow, when the Austrian soldiers conquered Belgrade in 1915,they built a monument dedicated to an Unknown Serbian soldier who gave his life defending the capital city of Serbia. By the end of the war, Yugoslav king Aleksandar Karadordevic thought of building a monument to all unknown Serbian soldiers killed in the First WW. The task was given to the famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, who built the monument consisting of eight female figures who represents eight parts of the former Yugoslavia. The monument was built in 1938, the three of those eight figures was done in stone by Giuseppe Grassi. The monument is placed at the top of the mountain Avala which is 20km from Belgrade.

Kalemegdan is ancient Belgrade fortress first built by Romans, then Turks, and at last by Austrians.Inside of the walls today there is a nice park, the Museum of Nature, theMilitary Museum,a Zoo,as well as two basketball and couple of tennis courts. Kalemegdan is the biggest and the most ancient complex in Belgrade. In Kalemegdan above all is situated the statue of Victor,it represents the Serbian victory in the First WW.That is an astonishing figure of a naked warrior with a sword and a falcon in his hands. The monument was made by a famous Yugoslav sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. The monument was reveald in 1928. The monument should have been placed at Terazije but the Belgrade ladies were against it because Victor is a naked male figure. Then it was decided to move it to Kalemegdan and raise it on a tall column. The monument is turned towards the former border of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy, that is for sure a must-see and also a landmark.
