A Change in the Way I Listen to Music

The book honestly, really, had no influence on the way that I listen to music. The one chapter that I was somewhat able to apply was the one about audio space. I find myself sometimes thinking about the environment in which the artist was in when they first sang the song when I'm listening to music.

Problems With The Book

The language and vocabulary used overall seemed a bit...extra. I don't know if Ratliff was trying to come off as mysterious and wise or what, but I think he made the book more complicated than it needed to be. I mean, even the very first line of the book, "We are listening in the time of the cloud.", who the heck talks like that???

I thought it was helpful that at the end of each chapter, Ratliff included a sample of songs that were examples of the musical element he was explaining. It made it a bit easier to understand each chapter as a whole.

My Overall Thoughts

Ratliff's "Every Song Ever" did a below average job at helping me think deeper about musical pieces. His writing seemed somewhat unorganized and there seemed to be a lot of fluff in some chapters. I was expecting more helpful guidance on how to listen to music, but a lot of it was honestly just confusing.
