Kelvin: This is a tough question with a lot of uncertainties. I think it really depends on how Sarah and Rudi handle their trauma and guilt complexes (if Rudi doesn't shoot himself at the end and turns his father in). I think if Rudi commits suicide, Sarah might not make it because she needs an authentic dialogue with her trauma and Rudi is the only one who could provides her that, since he is the son of a war criminal, a representative of the trauma. If Rudi is dead and she is left alone, she might not be able to find an answer or solution to her own fear, and she will probably transfer the victimized image of a Jew to her child, through which the traumatic experience will persist in the third generation. Under this circumstance, 'make it go away' might seem to be a better solution. In conclusion, I think the answer to this question is whether they are able to find a solution to their guilt and trauma. (and their love for each other might be able to do that)

Hermann is like a catalyst for all the "drama"(?) moments within the play. He is the one who spills the beans to Rudi about his father being a Nazi, and also appears later in the play revealing to Sarah that Rudi's been lying to her. Additionally, Hermann is used by Rudi as a (convoluted) way to get back at his father by making him think that his son was gay. This intersection is important to note since gays were also put into concentration camps. So in a way, by making his father think he was also gay, kind of makes him "face the music" as a Nazi since his father would have to put his son in a camp.

I feel that Hermann is a character who reminds Rudi of who he truly is. He reminds Rudi of the guild, hate, and cold person his father and his culture were in the war. Hermann represents the guilt that follows you everywhere you go, we see that when Rudi goes to Germany to try get away from his past, family and the trauma, falls for Sarah but still is lying to her. Hermann is the one who tells Sarah the truth about Rudi, and I honestly feel this could be out of spite for Rudi leaving him behind after they were intimate. Hermann character revolves around the truth always coming out, he was the one who told Rudi in the first place about what his father really did in the war.

I do believe that she is going to get an abortion for many reasons. Having a baby with an "enemy" and having that constant reminder of her traumatic past and the past of her parents might be too much for her. She seemed very adamant with both her breakup with Rudi as well as the ending to her pregnancy. We cant know for sure but given the trauma and the nature of hers and Rudi's relationship, i do believe she is going to "make it go away"

His initial reaction was one of disbelief, denial, and anger but upon learning about his father's past, he decides to delve into more details. I don't necessarily think there is a right or wrong choice, but I think Rudi responded in a way that only makes sense in the context of the situation.

I personally think that Sarah will get the abortion. Sarah was very nervous about her having this child. She was nervous about what people would think that she would have a baby with a German man, one with such personal connections to the war. I think not having involved in the baby's life would also scare her even more, because this would mean the child's reality would rely on her motherhood alone - something that we see she is not confident in. To add, I think It would be interesting to see if Rudi's (possible) suicide would make an impact on her decision. It could make it easier, but it could also make it much harder for her decision.

I would expect Sarah to keep the baby despite of generational trauma because her child could represent a new beginning for herself and her family. The child represents an innocent life, making the decision to 'make the baby go away' difficult. Although, in turn, as the ending suggests Rudi commits suicide, which would create even more trauma for Sarah, thus keeping the baby would be a far too difficult task for someone who has gone through so much.

I feel that Sarah most likely is going to get an abortion because of the idea instilled in having a " German Baby, " especially considering Rudi lied about his father true role as a SS doctor who killed many Jewish people to progress German medical literature. Closer to the end she constantly questions that her love for Rudi is more or less curiosity which acts as substitute for love and she even constantly mentions how poor of a mother she would be because of her own past. The breaking point comes from her final confrontation and past trauma. Her father and relatives already don't support the marriage and now she is in grievance when she realizes the horrible reality behind Rudi's past in comparison to her own.

Due to Sarah's generational trauma I think that she decides to "Make the baby go away". Even though she did love Rudi, his family history and even the fact that he is German is something that she struggles to accept. Even if Rudi were to turn in his father, it is unclear as to whether she would take him back. I think the painful history of the second world war is something that she has not found peace with and therefore wont have a child with someone who is comes from a Nazi family.

I think Sarah would want to keep the baby because it is an innocent life, however, Sarah and Rudi understand that life is not that simple. Even though Rudi's actions (which can be percieved as very systematic and unemotional) shows he was trying to take responsibility when she says she thinks she's pregnant at Auschwitz, it is more complicated than just signing papers. Although she may want to keep the baby, I think she will get an abortion because she might be unable to bear the harsh criticisms from her family. Also, on a personal note, Rudi's character made me think of him as immature when he laughs at the thought of his father having a jewish grandchild.

Rudi learns about his father's past once he talks to Hermann who tells Rudi how his father is a Nazi. This disappoints Rudi and he confronts Hermann and asks him why he was saying those things to him abut his father. This leads to Hermann showing Rudi a picture in a book where his father is in the Nazi camps. Evidently, Rudi is in disbelief but once he accepts what his father had done, he starts to hate him and act out, by hitting him, yelling at him, and being sexual with Hermann in front of his father, as an act of rebellion. Ultimately, I think once Rudi left Berlin that was a right choice because he needed a clear mind and he needed to escape the toxicity around his father, but it still followed him even once he left.
