A sweet and silly game is being played around the world and in all 50 states to comfort and entertain children during the current quarantine. People in every city are putting a teddy bear or other stuffed animals, or a drawing of a rainbow, in a window. Why are people doing this you may ask. Not only are schools closed because of the coronavirus, so are playgrounds, malls, movies theaters, toy stores, and pretty much anyplace else where children go to have fun. Even fast food play areas are closed.

So what can kids do for fun, other than watch TV or play video games? They can go for a walk or a drive with their parents. Those sometimes ordinary activities become a lot less boring when you turn them into a teddy bear hunt. That's what children are doing all over the world. They compete with each other to see how many teddy bears, rainbow pictures or other stuffed animals they can spot, and they keep count of their finds. This is something you can do too!
All these things send the same message to children -- and adults -- in their neighborhoods. "We're here. We're all connected. We're all going to get through this together. Even if, for the moment, we have to stay far apart."
Today we're going to learn some new things about real bears and ask ourselves why it is that bears hibernate. Hibernation is a deep sleep that happens to many animals during the cold winter months. Hibernation? A deep sleep? That's unusual! In science we say that anything that is unusual or difficult to understand or explain is called a phenomena. Let's investigate this phenomena together! Why do bears hibernate? What do you think?

Humans don’t hibernate to survive the winter. We need shelter when the weather gets cold. Look around you. What materials do you see that could help you build a shelter inside to keep you warm? Are there blankets, cardboard boxes, chairs, or pillows that you could use? Draw what your winter shelter would look like using the things you see. If you can, ask an adult, and try to build it!
