Whether it be a family member, friend, sense of community or home, these are some of the losses these individuals are faced with. Since these loses are something of the past, the new chapter in their life was started when this group joined together. They share each others pain, and use that the heal each other and grow together. For example, RiRi and Frenchie have a special bond, this could be due to the lost of their childhood once they both had to leave their old communities behind. This quote "Do you think circumstances make people turn bad? Or that people make circumstances bad to begin with?". Pg 53.This quote shows how they turned to each other to make situations (that weren't the best) better. They do so by establishing relationships and making stronger bonds with one and other. For example, this is shown through Frenchie and RiRi's bond- Frenchie takes care of RiRI. Frenchie tells part of the story to RiRi, which shows their bond.

The concept of journey is evident in the book through both physical and phycological  means. The characters are moving as a group and covering ground to go up north. During their migration (attempting to flee from the recruiters) they encounter emotions that reflect both their past and are launched into their future. Frenchie and Rose develop an almost romantic connection, RiRi grows up with Frenchie's guidance and care. The younger members of the group are also learning from Minerva and Mig, they are absorbing their culture and retrieving their own sense of identity. The natives are being robbed of their security and stability they once have, and forced to subject to cruel treatments. In fact, their human rights are being taken away.

In this specific sort of family they have formed, they rely the basis of it on trust. Trust to explain one's story and accept them, trust to help everyone survive and trust to never sacrifice anybody. This reliance on uncertainty is especially emphasized on page 83, when Wab soon learned the true nature of how "Not all Indians are Indians". "Here's your letter, paid in full. I'll be going now" ....
