Eboni (aka Jinju) Celebrating Hangeul Day!

On October 11, 2024 I had the opportunity to attend the Hangeul Day celebration hosted by the Korean Language program. Hangeul Day is a special time intended to celebrate one of most important parts of Korean history. It honors King Sejong’s creation of the modern day Korean writing system in the 1400s. King Sejong made a very big contribution to Korean society, such that the impact is still seen all over the world today when we look at Korean letters! I had the honor of being able to see his statue in Gwanghwamun Plaza when I lived in Seoul.

The BU Hangeul Day event had many participants! There were about three different rooms full of Korean language learners from all of the different levels of classes. We were able to enjoy many delicious traditional snacks and drinks and to socialize with one another. The professors led a presentation on Korean language. It included several fun videos that utilized pop culture to aid our learning. The presentation encouraged interaction from the students and some repetition practice. The topics ranged from everyday greetings to Korean dialects. It made me almost wish that I learned more Jeju dialect when I lived there! However, because I did not know any Korean at the start of my time there, my main focus was simply learning Korean itself rather than the dialect!

In summary, I enjoyed my time participating in this event and I thank the professors for their hard work in hosting an event with the goal of educating us as well as sharing their love and respect for Korean language and culture.

Won (김원) Pepero Day!

On October 18th, I was able to attend the Korean Pepero Day at Myles Standish with my classmates Hanjoo and Riki. We started off the event by decorating small cards to give to our friends. For around thirty minutes, I designed a card with stickers and a sweet message for my friend who was feeling sick that day. I wrote a small message saying that I hope she feels better and that my Pepero will cure her sickness. After finishing up the cards, I was then able to prepare my customized Pepero sticks in the Myles Standish kitchen. We dipped a plain Pepero stick into a chocolate fountain and decorated it with sprinkles and other small toppings. It was surprisingly a very simple process and took around five minutes for us to complete. While leaving it to dry for around fifteen minutes, Hanjoo, Riki, and I occupied ourselves by playing ping pong and pool in the game room. After our chocolate Pepero was fully made, we packed them into clear plastic packages and stapled the note onto the bag, ready to deliver to our friends!

I really enjoyed the Korean Pepero Day event because it provided a space for me to relax and do some arts and crafts amidst a busy week full of academics and work. It was also very nice to see so many diverse Korean language learners from all different levels actively participating too. At the event, I learned how to make my own homemade Pepero and was able to create a small gift that my friend greatly appreciated. Although I wasn’t able to eat my own Pepero, my friend told me that it was a very delicious treat. I also had a great time hanging out with Hanjoo and Riki and taking a lot of pictures of each other making the Pepero. I really appreciate the BU Korean program for hosting such a fun event and I look forward to attending more in the future.

Last month on the Oct 11th I attended the Hangeul Day Celebration cultural event hosted by the Korean Language Program. There were two parts in the event: first part was the Korean dialect and second part was the history of Hangeul. Through attended and participating in this event I learned alot of things about korea dialect and the hangeul history. During the first session Korean dialect I was very surprise of how varieties of Korean dialects exist. I knew some of the dialect through TV shows and my relative using it in Korea but I did not expect that there were alot of different Korean dialects that I don't know. I think it was very fun to participate talking in Korean with example dialects shown on the slides. I also learned some slangs and abbreviations in Korean that I didn't know of. After the first session we had a small break and ate traditional Korean snacks that the Korean Professors had prepared. They were all very good, especially the 약과. In the second session we learned about how Hangeul was made and its long history. The presentation went in depth about how 세종대왕 passed the offical Korean language, expressing the difference between Chinese characteristics. Overall, I had fun in participating in pronouncing Korean dialects and understanding the Hangeul history that I had forgotten about. I was able to relearn Korean culture and language.

On October 11, 2024 I attended the Hangul Day event. The event was divided into two parts. On the first part, we learned that Korea had different dialects, and on this day, we learned about the Daegu one. This was interesting to me because, I myself was originally from Daegu in first grade, but because I've been living in the US for so long, I lost the 사투리. Learning about the 대구 사투리 was like rediscovering my culture all over again.

I attended the Pepero Day event with my classmates, Won and Hanjoo, on October 18th. First, I wrote a card to my roommate, who is also half-Korean. After writing the card, I had time to make my pepero, so I played table tennis and billiards with Won and Hanjoo. After, I made my pepero by dipping a normal pepero stick into the chocolate fountain, and I decorated the pepero sticks with sprinkles. After the event, I gave the cart to my roommate and ate the peperos by myself, but I think I was supposed to give him both the card and the peperos. I had lots of fun spending time with Won and Hanjoo and making my pepero. I also had fun making my pepero. I would like to join similar event if I have an opportunity.

I attended 뺴뺴로 데이 with my classmates Won and Riki. We first started by making a card for our friends. We were able to write anything we thought it was a kind or a cute message to our friends. I wrote a message to my girlfriend who I gave the 뺴뺴로 too. Then after writing we all went to a small kitchen where they had all the materials to create. Making it was very simple, since we just had to cover our peperos with melting chocolate and choose the toppings we wanted to add on top of it. I chose rainbow sprinkles because my girlfriend really likes sweet treats. While waiting the pepero to get hard Riki, Won, and I played pinpong and 8 ball, which was very nice. After, it was done we wrapped around the pepero in a small plastic bag. I thought overall this program was very nice because not a lot of people know that pepero day is a huge and a fun event people do in Korea. The idea of non-Koreans making pepero and getting to know about this event was an unique opportunity.
