1. One of the cultures in America that is unacceptable in Indonesia is how to greet other people. In Indonesia, greeting someone we know is a must, especially greeting an older person. The etiquette of greeting older people is also different from greeting people of the same age as us. We should be more polite to greet older people by shaking or kissing the back of their hand. While in America, greeting other people is not a must or considered as an informal thing. Even when greeting older people, they just wave their hands, raise their eyebrows, or just call names. Of course it should not be done in Indonesia because it would be considered rude and make other people offended or even surprised. And I don't think I've ever been in a situation where someone from my culture behaved in an unacceptable way.

2. In indonesian culture, respecting eldership thought handshakes called “salim” is a thing that is common for younger people. But American people just say “hi” or only called the name.

In Indonesia, there are so many people who are negligent, so it is often called not respecting time, while America really values time.
Regarding Indonesian and American culture, Indonesia is known for its overly appreciative people who are said to be appreciative, i.e., lack of time discipline and so on, while Americans are very tipsy people in processing any work and also value their time.

When you reach the age of 20, usually young people in Indonesia have started asking questions about getting married. because marriage is considered as something that is mandatory and coveted by everyone. Meanwhile, parents in America leave all choices of marriage to their children. In fact, they can still have children even though they are not married.

The difference in dress between Indonesians and Americans is very different. In Indonesia, it is always formal, while in America, casual clothes are free and are often found to be too vulgar. in America dressing like that is common but not in Indonesia.

1. What are some examples of unacceptable behavior in your culture? In American culture? Have you ever experienced an uncomfortable situation because someone from your culture or from mainstream American culture behaved in an unacceptable way?

TOXIC FILIPINO CULTURE

Have you ever heard the phrase "Toxic Cultures"? Well, in the Philippines, not only the air, land, and water is polluted, but also the mind and resulting actions of the behaviors of Filipino people. Truly, these behaviors are unacceptable and can contribute to uncomfortability of someone or some groups, may it be their fellow Filipinos or foreigners.

First on the list of "Toxic Filipino Cultures" is the colonial mentality. Since Philippines was colonized by the foreign invaders from Europe, colonial mentality is engraved in the mind of all the Filipinos. Filipinos tend to think that people with white skin, pointed nose, blue eyes, and tall are handsome or beautiful. In my perspective, this mentality is totally wrong. This can cause low self-esteem and depression to some people who do not have the physical characteristics like the Western people's features.

Second, the existing of "Filipino Time". Filipino time means being minutes to hours late compared to the standard time. It is like having an own clock, although Filipinos are aware that the right time is the standard time. To be fair, not all Filipinos are usually late. There are still Filipinos who arrive in meetings punctually, although "being late" has become a stereotype to Filipinos already. Historians say that this attitude recounts back to the idea of siesta by the Spaniards that is still present today.

Third, the fatalistic resignation in an uncertain or difficult situation called "Mañana". Mañana is a term in Spanish that means “tomorrow”. Filipinos are so fond of this. Rushing things for tomorrow instead of doing it now. It is a common Filipino attitude where one may say "I will do it soon." or "I will do it next time.". It wastes a lot of time and often results to rushed works and failure of submitting things on the dot. Filipinos' concentration and dedication is a failure if this kind of attitude will be possessed. What is more toxic is that even Filipinos know the consequences of shoving things at the back of the to-do list, but Filipinos still do it anyway. Filipinos still choose to live in the present and accept the “enjoy things now and struggle later” ideology. Choosing which is more comfortable to us comes first rather than doing what is needed to be done. It is always giving in to temptations and distractions and setting important things aside.

Indeed, "Toxic Filipino Cultures" such as colonial mentality, "Filipino Time", and "Mañana" attitude" are unacceptable. It can cause uncomfortability and annoyance, especially to foreigners who are in the Philippines or who are interacting with Filipinos. How can Filipinos remove this from their everyday lives? For me, actually, it is only a matter of self-discipline.

1. we have a culture not to live together before marriage unlike in some countries that allow even to have sex before marriage. It is so different because we still have customs that must be obeyed.
2. Javanese people have a unique culture where when a younger person passes an older person they have to bow and smile as a sign of respect and greeting, this is what we usually do to foreigners. With people who don't know about this culture they might think it's weird.

1. In our discussion, example of unacceptable behavior in our culture are early marriage and arrange marriage. We feel uncomfortable when we see many early marriage or child marriage in our place. We thought that how they can survive an adult life if they are still a child. And an arrange marriage.
