Each student gets a week at some point throughout the year. They get to fill out a poster, invite a family member to come in and share about important things about themselves. This can be open ended and allows for students to share about themselves in variety of ways.

Morning Meeting

Each week students fill out a question about themselves that share about their interests and we read them and guess who it is. This leads to fun follow up questions and students connecting with others that they did not know had similar interests.

At the start of small groups, have students highlight one thing they did that they are proud of.

Birthday Portraits

On the first day of school students use sharpie on canvas to do a self-portrait of themselves. They consider pieces of their identity that they want to include in their portrait. Then on their birthday (or half-birthday for summer birthdays) students use watercolors to paint their portraits. At the end of the year I write a note on the back for each student highlighting their growth over the year.

Celebrate each month - i.e. African American History month in February, Women's History month in March

Beginning of the year activities to highlight kids activities outside of school allows everyone to see what other students are doing. It allows me to go and watch their activities. We continue to discuss what kids are involved in through morning meetings.
