The originating Olympic Games are traditionally dated to 776 BC, they were held every four years in Olympia and during the celebration an Olympic Truce was announced so that athletes and religious pilgrims could travel from their cities to the games in safety.

Their last recorded celebration was in AD 393, under the Byzantine emperor Theodosius I.

The French Baron Pierre De Coubertin reintroduced the Modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens.

On the event of the Olympics 1896 revival, the poet Kostis Palamas was delegated to write the lyrics and the music was composed by Spyridon Samaras.The anthem was performed for the first time in the opening ceremony in Athens in 1896 and in 1958 it was declared as the official Olympic Anthem by the International Olympic Comittee. Since then, it has been performed in the greek language at each Olympic Games: during the opening ceremony, when the Olympic flag is hoisted and during the closing ceremony, when the Olympic flag is lowered.
