         <description><![CDATA[<div>Cooperating Teacher 1's notes on my classroom management paper.<br><br>Overall, I thought you brought up some good points with regards to your classroom management plan.  Important ideas mentioned were being clear and consistent with both your rules, as well as with your consequences for students that don't follow the rules.  The only place where I have had to bend the rules here and there are for students with IEP's or 504 Accommodations.  Sometimes accommodations developed for particular students with certain disabilities will make you alter your classroom rules (late HW, behavior issues, etc).  Unfortunately, that is something that is out of your control, so you just have to do the best to manage.</div><div><br>In terms of the student calendar be careful, especially in your first time teaching a particular class.  While the calendar is a great organization tool for both you and the students, they need to know that the calendar is not set in stone.  There are times in College Algebra (teaching it for the 5th time) that I need to modify the calendar based on student understanding, an unexpected fire drill that takes up 1/2 the period, etc.  I always put a disclaimer at the bottom stating "This calendar is subject to change – please refer to class discussions for exact homework assignments."  </div><div><br>I also feel that the age of your students will determine how much you need to do to support them.  I would handle a classroom of freshmen a lot different than I would a classroom of seniors about to go off to college, military, or work.  I usually give older students a few extra days before I contact parents.  </div><div><br>I liked the part about being true to your personality in the classroom.  This is a part of teaching that I love.  You have t be yourself, but still be firm and fair.  You can't hold grudges.  Sometimes students make poor decisions, but it is important that they learn from those mistakes, so they don't make them when the consequences can be more serious.</div><div><br>In terms of inappropriate behavior, proximity to the student definitely helps eliminate distractions.  Also, I feel like I have been successful using wait time to try to get the behavior to stop.  If students are talking when they should be listening to instruction, simply just stopping and waiting for them to finish, usually does the trick, once they realize that you have stopped teaching the other 25 kids in the room, until they finish their conversations.</div><div><br></div><div>Overall, you brought up some good ideas!</div>]]></description>
