I had known about many of these, but the myth of consent never fails to surprise me. The idea that anyone would think they could say no to the police is counterintuitive to how we have been socialize to regard police authority. And that you can refuse and be arrested for a minor traffic stop is boggling.

A student who was labeled a felon, tried as an adult, found guilty, and was on probation after serving a prison sentence before he was even 18. I had been told that a violent egregious act happened, but when I began working with the student he shared that the felony was he had stolen clothing when he worked at a department store. Because of this, after he was released from prison and was 18 years old, he couldn't find work, he couldn't find a place to live, and he would never be able to vote. I find the practice of labeling people felons, and all that goes with that, to be a horrible practice. It denies people their citizenship.

Coming from a family with several firefighters, I always tended to believe public servants in uniform. Like many people, I thought our criminal justice system had plenty of protections embedded for the innocent. The advent of personal phone videos by POC, showing how they are really treated by white police officers (and others) has caused a disturbing shift to those perceptions. Now I have to question my own perceptions about how "equal" our society truly is, and how people who are supposed to protect us all are failing at that.
