In many of my courses, I try to have my students focus on their intended major, or one of their intended majors if they are not yet sure. Within that framework, I try to allow members of the class with the same or similar messages to form groups to help form those connections with similar minded students in the class.

In face-to-face classes, peer review of major assignments is a must. Setting the students up in small groups of 3-4 to share papers with each other is extremely useful. In those groups, I try to incorporate the major groups, but also integrate the members of one major with members of another major to help them understand that no field exists in a vacuum; they must be able to communicate between disciplinary areas.

As the instructor in a peer review session, my role is to interact with the groups on a less academic level. I will be providing feedback to the students on their drafts on my own, so I do not comment on them in a peer review. I will engage members of groups with commonalities or shared information. For example, when I have students in the Radiography program, I can bring up details about that program from my wife, who is a radiographer with over 30 years of experience. I have picked up many tips from her. For students in disciplinary STEM fields, my back ground in mathematics (as a math major before switching to English) creates a different kind of connection.

The peer review sessions often allow for those areas of presence to overlap, allowing for the social, cognitive, and teaching presences to come together in a meaningful activity. It allows for some students to gain more from the experience.
