When Astrid finished school she began working for the Vimmerby Times as a volunteer. She started out there writing reviews and proofreading articles; later she wrote them. At the age of 18 Astrid became pregnant by a man who was 30 years older than her and married. She left Vimmerby to go to Copenhagen to give birth to her child because it had the only hospital that didn't ask for the name of the child's father. When her son Lars was born she left him in foster care and moved to Stockholm to make a living. After three years Astrid took Lars to live with his grandparents until she could afford to support him on her own.

In 1931 Astrid married Sture Lindgren, the manager of the Royal Swedish Automobile Club. She gave birth to her daughter Karin in 1934. She stayed at home to raise her two children but she made extra money by writing short stories for a magazine called Landsbygdens Jul. She lived through World War One and World War Two, but Sweden remained neutral through both so they didn't have as much effect on her as they did the rest of the world.

One of Astrid Lindgren's most notable works is Pippy Longstocking. She came up with the idea when her daughter Karin was sick in bed and asked her to tell her a story about Pippy Longstocking. So she began to tell her daughter stories about the adventures of a girl Pippy Longstocking. In 1945, she wrote down the short stories she told to her daughter and compiled them into a book that she had published by Rabén & Sjögren. Pippy Longstocking quickly became a success worldwide, but the book caused some upset with parents and teachers because Pippy was so free-spirited. Pippy Longstocking was translated into 60 different languages, making it the 18th most translated book in the world.
