Sawyer is a fifth grade student with autism who is choosing not to communicate verbally

He is bright and a talented writer. He has been on an IEP since kindergarten. He was retained in first grade.

He attended a different school where he was in the autism unit.
Despite annual goals for improved oral language, Sawyer is regressing and only whispers at this point.

Sawyer needs to continue working in a small group on social skills and building familiarity with teachers, peers, and talking to them. He also needs instruction on how to advocate for himself, even nonverbally. He needs support from teachers in the general education classroom to put him in groups with familiar peers and to have the expectation that he will verbally answer the teacher and peers.

Recent ETR: Overall, Sawyer demonstrates average intellectual ability; however, results should be interpreted with caution as standardization was broken to allow Sawyer to provide written responses instead of verbal responses with one of the verbal tasks.

Current IEP: Sawyer struggles the most with communication and social skills such as holding a conversations, initiating conversations, and anything that requires him to be verbal or to advocate for himself. Sawyer's IEP goal is to ask and answer questions 1 time within a 30 minute class discussion. At this time, Sawyer does not do this.

Intervention Specialist: . In a small group, he will ask a peer a question when prompted to 100% of the time. He will answer questions verbally when prompted to in the small group 93% of the time (sometimes he nods nonverbally to answer). However, he knows during this small group time that the expectation is for him to talk and so he does it. Unfortunately, this is not carrying over into spontaneous conversations or into the whole class setting.

Sawyer will not talk above a whisper in all settings.

He does not talk at home, at school, or in public.
He will whisper to his friends. All whispering is done in small group or one on one. He knows when he could be overheard and will refuse to even whisper. When he does whisper, he plans a response with the fewest words possible. This sometimes causes a longer pause than necessary.
He has never spontaneously talked to a classroom teacher this school year.
He has not participated verbally in any class discussions or small groups in the classroom.
He will whisper in the intervention room when prompted but never spontaneously.

The team determined Sawyer needs to be more participatory

Based upon Sawyer's social weaknesses, he needs to be able to advocate for him in the general education setting. He doesn't do this in a nonverbal way either. When a teacher asks a nonverbal response question (such as "raise your hand if...."), he doesn't engage. He needs to be able to either write needs on paper to tell the teacher he needs something or engage in raising his hand to answer nonverbal questions. Sawyer also needs to have spontaneous conversations with peers and participate in classroom discussions.

During reading book clubs, he would allow his prepared answers to be read aloud.
We would like to have him participate by writing during class discussions and small group activities. These responses could be read aloud by a peer.
Some other options include just a thumb up if he agrees or down if he disagrees. He could write something and have another student read it aloud. He could hold up what he has written for the teacher to see.
His concern with drawing attention to himself can be easily fixed by seating him at the back of the room.
