Dear Grandma,

Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me and for sharing your memories so openly. I truly enjoyed our conversation, especially hearing about your experiences raising your children. Your warmth, humor, and willingness to reflect made our time together meaningful and memorable.

One thing that surprised me was how much I learned about your parents, and that your father raised and showed horses. Hearing those stories helped me appreciate how powerful certain life events can be and how they continue to influence us decades later.

From our conversation, I learned a great deal about aging successfully. Your perspective showed me that staying curious, nurturing relationships, and remaining open to change play huge roles in living a fulfilling life. I also walked away with a valuable life lesson that it’s often the simple, everyday moments, not just the big milestones, that become the memories we remember most.

Thank you again for sharing your story with me. I feel grateful for the time we spent together.

Thank you,
Celia

Reflection

My overall reaction to the interview was warmth, admiration, and gratitude. The older adult was open, genuine, and thoughtful in sharing her life story, and she responded to me with kindness and patience. The focus on her memories, ranging from her small town upbringing to raising her four children mainly on her own while her husband served as a doctor in the military, created a sense of connection and respect. Hearing her reflect on the joys of Christmas traditions, her love of reading and running, and the meaningful role her grandchildren played in her life allowed me to understand her identity beyond her age or health challenges.

To support the reminiscing process, I adapted my communication by using active listening, maintaining a calm and present demeanor, and asking open ended questions that encouraged deeper storytelling. I used therapeutic techniques such as allowing silence, nodding, and validating her experiences, especially when she discussed difficult topics for her, like her divorce, raising children with limited support, and managing COPD after years of smoking. I chose these approaches to help her feel safe and heard, which is consistent with reminiscence therapy and person-centered communication. The outcome was that she became more comfortable sharing emotional parts of her story and was able to express pride, regret, and joy. Her willingness to open up demonstrated the effectiveness of creating a supportive listening environment.

At the beginning of the course, I chose to describe older adults as knowledgeable, retired, health concerns, grandparent, wisdom, kind, and decreased mental status. After completing this assignment, some of these words still felt accurate, especially “knowledgeable,” “wisdom,” and “kind,” since her stories reflected a lifetime of experience, resilience, and warmth. However, my views also expanded. While she did face health concerns, particularly COPD and vision loss, her identity was not defined by them. She demonstrated independence, strength, humor, and emotional clarity, which challenged my assumption of “decreased mental status.” Hearing her speak so vividly about her childhood, her passions for tennis and running, and the joy she finds in her grandchildren reminded me that aging involves continued growth and meaning. This assignment helped me move beyond viewing older adults only through a health related lens and instead see them as whole, dynamic individuals with meaningful stories and ongoing goals.

This experience will influence my future nursing practice by strengthening my ability to build therapeutic relationships with patients of any age. Practicing active listening, being fully present, and encouraging individuals to share their stories are skills that apply across all settings, whether I am caring for pediatric patients, young adults, or older adults. Hearing her life story reminded me that every patient has a background that shapes their fears, strengths, and coping abilities. By taking the time to understand the person behind the diagnosis, I can provide more compassionate, individualized care. This assignment reinforced that effective communication, empathy, and respect for the patient’s lived experiences are universal nursing skills that improve trust, patient satisfaction, and overall quality of care.
