Maybe a Fox, by Kathi Appelt and Alison McGhee is a fantasy fiction Texas Bluebonnet Award (defining quote)
“Maybe you turn into wind
Maybe you turn to stars
Maybe you go to another world
Maybe you turn into a fox and
You run and run and run faster than a torpedo, faster than the sound of light, faster than a speeding bullet…….
So that you can keep the ones you love most safe.”
The quote defines many things about this story starting with the title. When I first saw this book and its title it didn't seem appealing to me, Maybe a Fox what? However this book quickly won me over as one of my favorite story and this quote sums it up. Children often ask what happens when you die; this quote defines a game sisters play in this story regarding that very question. These sisters mother had died when they were young; the game gave them comfort in their grieving. The quote defines the mysteries of the connections between humans, nature and destiny.

This quote along with the story is a good way to encourage children to discuss and process grief in a comforting way. Helping to understand that death is part of life, no matter your culture or spiritual beliefs.

Helen Keller the world in her heart by Lesa Cline-Ransome, Illustrated by James Ransome is a non-fiction biography (Review)
This is an appropriate biography written for young readers, kindergarten to fourth grade, about the younger years of Helen Keller, who was deaf-blind and grew up to become an American author.

This remarkable picture book narrates and illustrates Helen’s world from frustrations of being unable to communicate to finding the W-O-R-D-S to express “the world in her heart.” The setting begins with what Helen could sense from the summer day warmth as she waited to taste the delightful sweet smell of the cake baking. The collaboration of the author and illustration captivatingly portrays what Helen was sensing in a way that brings the reader into those senses. The story then traces back to how an illness took Helen’s since of seeing and hearing and how Helen’s family has worked to help her to learn to communicate. Then the story reveals how Helen’s life changed forever with the help of a “stranger”, Annie Sullivan. Annie was Helen’s teacher that opened up the world of words and opened up “the world in her heart” to communicate.

The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill is a Fantasy John Newberry Medal (Letter to friend, my niece)
Jacklyn,
I have found the most incredible book, "The Girl who Drank the Moon." Kelly Barnhill has written this gorgeously written fantasy about a girl who becomes "enmagicked" after a witch feeds her moonlight. The story takes place in a world filled with magic, and it shows readers how witches, dragons, swamp monsters, and townspeople can either separate themselves from those around them or they can join in and thrive. You will be just unable to put this book down after you experience the witch rescuing the children after their parents take them to the forest and just leave them there for her. The witch Xan shares her home with a swamp monster named Glerk and a tiny dragon named Fyrian. The girl Luna is the name Dan, the witch gives her, she lives with the witch and her monster and dragon, this is part of the adventure. Luna does not know she has all these powers from the magic of the moon light. The cover is so adorable it makes you want to read, you will also be pulled in and not be able to stop reading until the end. Let me know how much you like this book and if you agree it was the best book ever.

Sincerely,
Pamela

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren is a Fantasy (Review)
Pippi Longstocking is a nine-year-old-girl that lives in a house called Villa Villekulla. Pippi's mom died when she was a baby and her father, a sea captain, fell overboard during a storm and was never seen again. Tommy and Annika live next door to Pippi and are mesmerized about her appearance and fanciful stories, so they become fast friends. Pippi, Annika, and Tommy go on a scavenger hunt looking for things, looking for objects of interest or value. The three friends witness a bully and his friends picking on a small boy. Pippi picks up the bully and hang him on a tree branch. She proceeds to put the rest of the friends all over the yard; they just look at her frightened to do anything. Pippi is a delightful girl that lives alone with her monkey in her wacky house. She tries to learn her "pluttification" tables at school, fights with the man in the circus, plays tag with the police officers that try to take her to a children's home. Astrid Lindgren generations ago created a unique and loveable character that all children would like to be, sometime. Pippi's red headed pigtails' and freckles set her apart from most normal children. I have always liked this book since I read it years ago and most recently with my red headed freckled faced niece, she really enjoyed the book

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears by Verna Aardema and illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon is a West African Traditional Tale and a Caldecott Medal (Blog)
People run around talking but saying nothing and that is how gossip gets started. Have you ever played that game where the people are told something and 10 people later it’s not the same? That is exactly what happens to monkey in Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears. Monkey is blamed for killing the owlet, when it was because the mosquito buzzed in the iguanas ear that set off a series of causes and effect that scared the monkey to fall on the owlet. King lion wanted to know why the owl won’t wake the sun, so working back through the series of cause and affect each animal blamed the previous animal until it was traced back to the actions of the mosquito. They animals were unable to locate the mosquito to “bring her to justice”, so the mosquito still buzz’s in people’s ears. The owl decided to wake the sun after she heard the truth, which in a since signifies enlightenment.

This is an effective book and fun story to teach children cause and effect, play the gossip game is a good activity for teaching this book.

https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/why-mosquitoes-buzz-peoples-ears-discussion-guide/

There are many activities and lessons that can be used when teaching this book; sequencing, history, geography and more. See the following we sites for information about lesson planning Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears.

http://www.easyliteracy.com/mosquitoesbuzzlesson.html
https://dcmp.org/guides/10106.pdf

The Round House by Louise Erdich is Historical Fiction, National Book Award (Recommendation)
The Round House is a great story for teaching tolerance, diversity, culture, life on Native American reservations, and the history of tribal law and ceremonies. I recommend this story that is told through the eyes of a young Native American man coming to age on a reservation when his mom is violently attacked. His journey takes the reader through history, the tribal law and relationship to local, state, and federal law. The author is profoundly descriptive about the family bonds, ties to the tribe and growing up. Looking for answers to the mystery takes the reader on a great adventure on a Native American reservation that can be valuable when lesson planning activities to use this story as a teaching assignment. There is great vocabulary and terms, fun characters and mysteries story line. Some activities might include a mock trial or a Indian ceremony with all the traditional dress. I really enjoyed the journey to solving the mystery of Joe’s adventure and learning about life on a Native American reservation.

https://www.justice.gov/tribal/tribal-law-and-order-act

http://www.pbs.org/weta/thewest/resources/archives/eight/dawes.htm
http://www.bookrags.com/lessonplan/the-round-house/funactivities.html#gsc.tab=0

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is Realistic Fiction (Review)
Melinda Sordino called 911 after being raped by Andy Evans in the woods; she is left speechless and runs home. After the police arrive at the party that Melinda was attending they break up the party and arrest some of the students that were there. Melinda can't remember what happened; she wants to repress the memory, at the same time she wants to speak up about what happened. Melinda looses all her peers' friendships when they realize she is the one who called the police. Melinda's depression deepens, she starts skipping school, withdrawing from her parents, and they think she is doing it for attention. Melinda's lab partner encourages her to speak up for herself, end the silence. When I read this book my mind was not only on Melinda but all girls, any girl that has had to go through this humiliation. This book should be recommended reading for not only girls, but also boys and or all adults. I say this because we never know just like Melinda when we would need to call 911. Because of the news lately everyone needs to be better educated about sexual harassment and how it affects the victim.
