- The first time we see him he is seen nervously walking away as Conde investigates in the school.
- His actions from the beginning tell the viewer and Conde that he knows something - leading Conde to try and break him to talk
- He tells Conde that he doesn't get involved in people's lives
- His words and actions portray that he is torn between two things - he wants to help Conde but he does not want to be a snitch
- Under some pressure from Conde he eventually tells him about Lisette giving cheat notes for exams and that Lázaro was one of the students getting these cheat notes
- José Luis is depicted as a nice young man who wanted to help but he was scared for his own well-being if he told Conde anything
- Conde picked to keep pressuring José Luis from the start as he seen that he was nervous and that he would be easier to get information out of than the other students
- Conde sees that he is somewhat of an outsider with no friends ( he always appears alone) therefore he would not be corrupted by loyalty and would eventually speak

- Similarly to the film, José Luis is seen as very nervous
- In the book, José Luis seems to be more open to talking to Conde than in the film
- However he still has doubts in talking to him '' A mí me queda un año y pico en el Pre y quiero terminar bien, ¿usted sabe? Por eso le repito que era buena profesora y que nos ayudaba mucho'' (pg122)
- He appears as a quite boy who wants to stay out of trouble
- Past experience with the police and a teacher further constrain him from talking
- However later on he agrees to talk '' y me puse a pensar'' (pg172) as his good consciousness was coming out
- José Luis in the book seemed like a more open character than in the film
- He was fighting within himself whether to tell information or not but eventually his consciousness led him to tell Conde about the exam tips that Lisette was giving to Lázaro

- After José Luis gives up his name and the police search for him, he attempts to run away from the police therefore hinting that he is hiding something
- The police knew that Lázaro's family was involved with drugs
- When interrogated, he tells Conde that he was having sex with Lisette for a few months but that he did not kill her
- However he finally cracks under the weight of the evidence that the police show against him such as his finger prints, semen and the testimony of the neighbor
- In the scene when the murder happens we get an insight into Lázaro's psyche
- Lázaro feels inferior to Lisette as she seems to have money and control, two things he doesn't have - He also feels rejected by her as she repeatedly tells him to leave - she is clearly using him for sex while he had feelings for her
- Ultimately the combination of the inferiority, rejection and Lisette telling him she won't give him cheat notes anymore leads to him killing her in a violent manner
- In the book, Lázaro has a background role
- When he is interrogated the guilt could be seen on him '' ’Los músculos de Lázaro perdieron volumen y la caja del pecho se desinfló’’
- Once again we can see that he was feeling inferior to Lisette as he emphises that she had money ''Yuri fue hasta El Niágara y compró dos botellas más con dinero que ella le dio''

Depiction of the Young Generation analysis: 1)A comparative view(The Young vs. The Old Generation)

- Young peoples’ rebellious spirit and the feeling of superiority can be seen during their first conversation with Conde at school: : „[…] no nos gusta hablar por gusto con los policías, le vamos a responder tres preguntas,[...] -They express superiority over the police force/old generation, when they give Conde conditions.

-The different understanding of freedom

The Young say they are nerds because they are free to be whoever they want to be: „Porque nos gusta. Cada cual es libre para ser lo que quiera, pelotero, cosmonauta, friqui o policía. [...] Eso es democrático, ¿no le parece? Le queda una”

This for Conde is incomprehensible, he looks at the young with some sort of jealousy, because deep inside he would want to go back to his school days. Nevertheless, the difference between his generation and the „new” young generation is too big.

For Conde this is a passive democracy, which can be understood as passive freedom or fake liberty. Conde, as a representative of the old generation knows better about how life in Cuba relly looks like.

-Young peoples' philosophy and attitude

The Young speak openly about having no expectations towards life: „-„Nosotros no esperamos nada de la vida” For Conde this is a lie: „„Esto tambien es mentira” For them this is the reality of not being let down. The Young here adapt a philosophical approach, while Conde is more realistic.

-Incomprehension towards the crime motive

Lazaro does not confess in the book at all, he seems to show no guilt and takes no responsibility for his actions. The motive maybe is clear to the young characters in the book, nevertheless, to Conde it is incomprehensible maybe even strange. He keeps asking himself how can such a young man kill someone with cold blood and not feel guilt? : „¿Por qué un muchacho de dieciocho años podía hacer algo así, tan definitivo y animal? ¿Por qué la búsqueda de la felicidad podía terminar en aquel deterioro que apenas comenzaba a producirse y que no terminaría nunca[…]”

First of all the crime itself is typical to the hard-boiled genre as there is sex and violence involved in the murder. It also touches upon some serious social problems that cannot be solved only by arresting the murderer, such as drugs, disrespect for educational institutions, corruption, poverty, social inequalities.

More importantly, however, Padura presents the crime as something new to the Island – something foreign and more associated with western democratic countries rather than communist Cuba, not only because of the violence, drugs and sex, but also because the murderer was a young 18-year old student. This seems to be something that could happen only in capitalist society, not in the „ideal” communist state.

After gaining a better insight to the Young Peoples’ lives we can notice some sort of pattern. First of all, the victim was the one that had access to „the outside world” and all the goods, that the majority of Cubans desperately wanted to have, but it was out of their reach. Is it fair to say then, that the socio-economic situation that was supposed to play a background role in the book in the end develops into the main reasons for the crime?

Seems as if the young were desperately trying to liken themselves to capitalist societies, this can be proven in the way they spoke about „democracy”, their attatchement to material goods and the drugs problems.

In conclusion, Padura shows that the young generation is driving more towards the western capitalist states, even though they live in communist Cuba. We can see the Young as a proof that Cuban society is becoming more and more alike to the US society, ironically, this was what it was trying to avoid in the first place.

We used pictures and GIF’s as a tool to engage with the class more and make our presentation more attractive. It was relatively easy to add information and pictures to the padlet and it was easily accessible by each member of the group as we could all access it online. It was easy to maneuver around the padlet rendering the information more meaningful. I personally found it a useful tool for presenting as it allowed me to explore the topic of my discussion in an alternative and innovative way. However, having said that a few negatives that need to be addressed are firstly the padlet is not in chronological order and it was difficult to space the information out. Altogether I would recommend this platform for presentations as it acted as a useful tool for this topic.

Reflective Essay by Jonathan

When I first used padlet it appeared quite complicated and unusual. I soon adapted to it and realised that it is a very effective tool. Padlet is extremely useful as it allows you to easily add many different types of media to your presentation. In our padlet we were able to use gifs and images to present our topic alongside the text. This allowed us to effectively illustrate our topic while the gifs provided slight humour which helped us retain the audience’s attention. If I was creating another palet I would include sound and video files as well. It was very easy for our group to create the padlet. As the padlet was available online, each member of the group was able to contribute quickly and efficiently. While padlet was a new, exciting way of presenting, there were a few negative aspects. The format of padlet resembles a wall of information rather than the traditional PowerPoint style. Unfortunately, this meant that organising information was difficult. Furthermore, the information on the padlet was slightly awkward to present as it was not linear or chronological. I would recommend padlet as a useful alternative tool for presentations.

Padlet for me is seen as a good alternative form for delivering presentations. Mainly due to the possibility to use different types of media (GIF's, photos, videos, songs etc.) Nevertheless, I find it a bit chaotic, as there is no chronology and all the elements of the presentation are in random places on the board. For this reason Padlet would not be my first choice as a tool for presentations. Having seen other presenattions delivered by people in our class, I have figured that while creating a presentation in Padlet the emphasize should be put on the creative side of it rather than the informational, due to the reason stated by me earlier. I found the Padlet easy enough to work with, as everything could have been easily done online by all the group members, therefore it is a really good tool when it comes to group works. Nevertheless, overall I did not like it ,as it is too far from the traditional PowerPoint style and it was too difficult to organise our information and to present it later.

I found that the padlet was a great way to be able to express myself while giving a presentation. It brings a new dimension to giving presentations as it engages the audience more than a powerpoint would. We could use different types of media like Gifs to engage the audience and create excitement among the presenter and his audience. My responsibility was to analyze The four Seasons in Havana, (Vientos de cuaresma), and to notice when and at what moment José Luis and Lazaro appeared in the Netflix film and to briefly compare these appearances to the Novel. To be honest I found this task a little broad and chaotic as all the information was spread out.The most effective thing about the Padlet was we all worked well as a team and that there was a fine line between enjoying ourselves and being too serious to distributing valuable and intriguing information about the topic at hand. We worked really well as a group and met up three times to discuss the film and novel openly once in the library and twice in the arts café to put our work together and help each other out. Overall I felt our group worked successfully and i would highly recommended using the Padlet. My only adjustment for people using it again next year would be that there should be more emphasis placed on the creative side to the Padlet rather than the informational side!!
