As an avid player of video games, I decided to do some research into video games being used as propaganda. While there are no incredibly recent uses of games as propaganda, the propaganda video games that exist are quite concerning. To show this, I would like to present to you a video game created by the American White supremacist organization “National Alliance”. The game is called “Ethnic Cleansing” and during gameplay, the player is either a neo-Nazi or KKK Klansman instructed to persecute minorities. While the game is now difficult to find and play, it was a way of entertaining while also perpetuating the idea that white people are better than all other races. I have linked the Wikipedia as most other traces of the game have been removed from the internet or are incredibly vulgar. Not all video games lead to violence, nor are people who play video games inherently violent; however, this game definitely nurtures harmful ideas and behaviors.

One great example of propaganda that sits at the intersection of information, entertainment, and persuasion can be pulled straight from this week's TV broadcasts. This week, Kamala Harris was a guest on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," and she took a question from an audience member about the constitutionality of mandatory buyback programs. Kamala Harris is, at least in my opinion, a very entertaining speaker, and in this particular speech she uses descriptive language that allows you to step into her shoes and see her experiences with these weapons. I also found her argument that the buy back program was not only constitutionally acceptable if performed appropriately, but necessary for the health of our country, to be compelling. Additionally, the information she shares about assault weapons and the history (or lack thereof) of congressional action on the issue was informative.

In comedy, comedians will use propaganda in their sets, bringing up certain relevant issues, but saying it a way that you can hear the humor in it. In this clip, if you skip to 4:00 and watch until 4:15, Iliza does exactly that. She talks about how "women are not good with rejection from flirting, but with rejection from equal wages, governing our own bodies, we put up with that all the time." Drawing attention to this issue we're having in the United States, but doing it in a way that it makes you think more about that issue.

There is a such a public backlash to this as people complained as soon as they were revealed. Sandy hook and other organizations have already spoken out about it but I couldn't believe it.

In many Netflix shows propaganda is shown throughout episodes. "Orange Is the New Black" recently came out with it's final season. Throughout the other seasons propaganda is shown throughout to show the unfair treatment of the women in these prisons. In the final season deportation is shown and the hardships that come with it. These women are using their stories as a form of propaganda to show that the laws need to be changed in order for their rights to be heard. Propaganda isn't always just a picture, it can be throughout stories. This form of propaganda uses the emotional aspects as well because watching it can be very upsetting to many people.

This week a video surfaced of Muslim Congress Woman, Ilhan Omar, dancing at a party. A conservative comedian, Terrence K. Williams took the video of Omar dancing and tweeted the false narrative that she was celebrating 9/11. Trump retweeted the video, bashing Omar and perpetuating the idea that she is dangerous threat to congress. Omar defending herself on twitter tweeting, "This is from a CBC event we hosted this weekend to celebrate black women in Congress. The President of the United States is continuing to spread lies that put my life at risk. What is Twitter doing to combat this misinformation?"
This is an example of propaganda because it is at the intersection of information, entertainment and persuasion. Trumps' tweets inaccurately informs the mass public that Omar celebrated 9/11.His tweet entertains the mass public because he is providing a platform where his supporters can engage in bashing and degrading this woman, which is in their eyes the opposing "enemy". Lastly, his tweet persuades because he reinforces the narrative that the democratic politicians are anti-american, who do not strive to "Make America Great Again." It also perpetuates islamophobia by reinforcing negative stereotypes against muslim people.

Propaganda Example - Kayla Ramirez-Delgado
Instagram is a newer platform for propaganda where young adults or children may be at risk for change in mental health. Celebrities use their platform to promote brands that target weight loss or cosmetic industry. The dangers in this is not all instagram promoted ads are good for you and may alter the way you think or feel about yourself. Instagram has set up a new policy to restrict people under 18 from viewing content in this matter. Weight loss and cosmetic ads are some of the ads that will be restricted from persons under 18 years old. Instagram does hold some risk which was proven by a survey on 14-24 year olds and it showed instagram has could cause an affect on ones mental health. Regardless of age Instagram users should be conscious of what they are liking and who they are following because they might be tricked into spending their money on a product that doesn’t show results or affect the way they feel about themselves.

Instagram is a photo and video-sharing social networking service, which allows users to assign filters to photos and share them with followers. Instagram draws young women to compare themselves to unrealistic-photoshopped reality. On Instagram, you post pictures and videos that you want people to see you as, which is not necessarily always who you actually are or what you actually have. This can come a sick obsession and a different identity oppose to your true self. Suddenly, girls and young women begin comparing themselves and their bodies to what they now believe is "perfect" because of Instagram. Instagram not only creates insecurities, but has now created this term called "FOMO", Fear of Missing Out.

Comedian's are also celebrities that, I feel, fans can relate to due to them talking about their lives and giving their opinions on relevant issues. The example I chose comes from one of my favorite comedians of all time, Dave Chappelle. In his most recent special for Netflix, Chappelle does a bit where he talks about going to Standards & Practices for a sketch he made on Chappelle's Show back in the early 2000s. It's a funny bit that points out double standards between language and marginalized groups.

In this clip and many other clips that this show has put on YouTube we get an entire monologue of Colbert using satire to make fun or make light of events going on in the country and white house. This show is a form of propaganda because as a form of entertainment it can spread misinformation to a large audience who do not know a lot about politics. As the reading said entertainment can be used to shape norms and shape how we view things and late night television is just a part of this. It reinforces this lighthearted idea that oops things just might get better if we make fun of it.
