My name is Holly Vallis, I was born and raised in the Bay Area where I am now raising my own family. I am currently a stay at home mom to my two amazing kids and wife to my husband of 5 years who works full time as a business development organizer for his Union.

When it comes to the cost of convenience, Self-checkouts are something that sticks out in my mind. Not only are we giving up the personal interactions with the employees of stores, were also losing jobs, and seeing an increase of theft. The convenience of being able to scan and bag your own items is great for those who are in a rush or just have a few items to pick up but when the day comes and there are only self-checkout stations available, we’ll be the ones truly missing out.
When you walk into a store and the employee recognizes you, asks how you’ve been, or makes small talk with you, that is the personal interaction that us as humans need. With the self-checkout stations more people are becoming recluse and avoiding people all together. This new generation is learning to make this the new normal, it’s the same with kids sitting in their rooms playing video games instead of being outside, making friends, getting exercise.
The cost of a self-checkout station yearly is less than paying an employee, which is why when it comes to shoplifting most business owners still opt for the self-checkout stations because the loss is still less compared to paying an employee.
Machines seem to be taking over our lives in major ways. Everything can be done with a push or a button either on your phone or laptop so it’s no wonder that self-checkout stations have become a part of shopping also. On one hand, self-checkout stations are taking over jobs and human interaction. But on the other hand, we live in a time where everything is becoming technologically advanced and we are fortunate enough to be able to experience it. We have been evolving towards more intelligent technology since the invention of electricity. We went from writing letters, to emailing, and from calling to texting.
No matter what technological advances we might fight against, this is what keeps the world moving. We are constantly searching for the newest, fastest, easiest way to do things and although it doesn’t seem fair that people can be easily replaced by a machine, that is the day in age we live in. For me, I’ll keep fighting against the system any chance I get and I will still be standing in line, whether I have 1 item or 100 items, to have go to an actual cashier.

- Promote equal housing opportunities -

As Americans having a roof over our head is a necessity, yet it’s almost unachievable when rent is more than your salary. Affordable housing is always something that is talked about, but the plan seems to fall flat when it comes to actually doing it. Most areas here in the bay area are so overly priced you might as well find the nearest homeless encampment and make yourself at home. This is a human rights issue that needs to be figured out.
We are fighting for basic human rights all while our "president" is more concerned about his white suburban neighborhoods staying just that, white and un-disturbed by low-income housing or a more diverse community.
When some people think of low-income they often think of crime when really low-income means, single parents trying to make due, individuals who maybe hit a rough patch and need some help getting on their feet, this is where we need to change the minds of closed minded people. Instead of focusing on how to help some one succeed, we are so busy trying to put low-income in one category. Low in-come means housing costing less than 30% of your income. How can anyone survive making minimum wage, paying more than half their monthly income on rent and still afford food, electricity, and gas? its next to impossible.
The goal is to shed light on this situation and help promote programs to help fund housing and help people qualify for FHA loans to buy a house.

Welcome to my contentment plan, when I first heard about the Apricity machine, I was not sure I would be willing to be a participant, how can a machine tell me what to do to be happy? It seemed too far-fetched. After reading more into it, I was willing to take the test and go into it opened minded. Read through my padlet to find the commands I had been given from the Apricity to become a happier person; Don't use self-checkouts, promote equal housing opportunities, Equalize women's rights. Although the Apricity does not explain your personal results, I decided to write what the commands mean to me.

In Katie Williams’ “Tell the time machine goodnight”, Pearl, the main character is a contentment technician for Apricity. Apricity is a machine that with the swab of your saliva gives you results of how to be more content with your life, whether it be, eat more tangerines, cut off the tip of your index finger, or smile more. Williams takes us through the life of Pearl and her son Rhett, a teenager dealing with some struggles. Through the story we go through different characters and their journey with the Apricity machine. How can a few commands from a machine be the answer to your personal happiness? Williams writing keeps you engaged and invested in the lives of the charters, the ending left me wanting more!

- Equalize women's rights -

eing a woman in the 21st century has taught us to be strong, use our voices, and not to back down. Though is seems as much as we push there is still resistance. Our rights that we have worked so hard for are still being threatened or taken away. We are still making a lower salary than our male co-workers, abortion and women’s health is constantly being toyed with, and over-all equality. If a woman is expected to have a full-time job, take care of her kids, manage the house and all the responsibility it comes with, how is that she is viewed as less than equal to a man? Not only have women fought for their rights, the thing we are fighting for are considered human rights.
In our society, women make $.77 to a dollar compared to men. Obama said it to be and embarrassment. How is it that women make so much less then men in a world where we're all meant to be equal. In 2016 Britian did a study and found that women also take on 60% more of the household duties than men. And were still expected to hold a full-time position outside of the home.
In the discussions of abortion, the decision doesn't just end with laws being passed, this is a battle that is fought in many arenas, Sofia Ungar said. Not only do law makers get to choose what is legal, but when it comes to religion many women find that abortions aren't available to them because of religious rules. I believe having more education around sex ed will not only lower the amount of abortions needed but also help women with birth control options, safe sex information, and planned parenthood. By focusing on the fact that women are still needing abortions, we are overlooking the deeper problem of there not being many resources for young girls to learn about safe sex and helping them from finding themselves in the position of needing to terminate a pregnancy, as I was also when I was much younger.
Once, not too long ago, having a woman in any political position was unheard of. In 2019 the United states compared to the rest of the world we had the largest number of women in a political position. All of the rights we have won wouldn’t have been possible if the nineteenth amendment wasn’t passed, women’s right to vote! My own view is that what Elizabeth Stanton and Lucretia Mott insist is a forum to raise awareness is in fact a demand for a change that was a long time coming. The sky is the limit for women’s rights, we are making history right now with our Vice president Kamal Harris, Ultimately, what is at stake here is opening up opportunities for all women to take charge of their life and stand up for equal rights!
