Strategies for Multiplication:

As learners are already used to using a number line for basic addition and subtraction sums, it is a good introduction to repeated addition as they can see the bunny repeatedly hopping equally sized hops (see Grade 2 Maths DBE Book 1 pg. 40 as pre-knowledge). The bunny hops over two numbers consecutively (repeatedly).

During number concept development learners will be asked to draw 2/3/4/5 circles (groups) on their whiteboards and use their counters (beans, macaroni, beads or buttons) to make 2/3/4/5 groups of 2/5/10. 
As soon as equal concrete groups have been made, learners will be asked to write down a number sentence, using the amount of counters and groups. Once learners have grasped the concept of repeated addition; they can be introduced to changing the addition number sentence into a multiplication number sentence.

For further practice and consolidation of the concept, learners will be asked to complete activities such as pg. 60 & 61 in their DBE workbooks.
