Question 1:
I have 4 bags of marbles. There are 2 marbles in each bag. How many marbles do I have all together?
Differentiation:
LA Group: Use concreate materials. MA Group: Draw the groups (simi-concrete)
HA: Write sum using number symbols 2+2+2+2 =8 Learners may also choose to skip count to get answer.
Question 2
How many legs does 4 hens have?
LA: Learners many want to draw the pictures and then count the legs one at a time.
MA: Learners may still draw, but would attempt to skip count to get total.
HA learner would write sum using symbols.
Challenging related question would be showing a picture where you can only see the legs sticking out (e.g. from behind a cart) and asking them how many chickens there are in the picture by only grouping the legs.
Question 3 Arrays
1. Show learners a picture showing 4 rows of 5 carrots. Ask learners how by they will work out how many plants there are in the garden.
Explore learners number sentence ideas looking at different abilities e.g. 4+4+4+4+4= or 5+5+5+5 or 4x5 or 5x4
2. If the farmer would want sell his carrots how many should he place in a bunch? (Learners could explore different grouping)
3. the number 4 could also be explored as two groups of 2 if learner is more able at counting in 2's.

Give learners counters and ask to them to organise their counters in arrays to help them count. Explore and represent your calculations using concrete / semi-concrete or Abstract methods depending on ability.
