Deep Ocean Tsunami Detection Buoys are used to confirm tsunami waves from oceanic earthquakes. They observe and record the sea level, sometimes predicting tsunamis in real time. They have anchors attached to the ocean floor that record pressure changes in the ocean that are transmitted to satellites in weather laboratories.

A Tsunami is a series of ocean waves caused by underwater earthquakes, landslides, or volcanic eruptions. Rarely, a Tsunami can be generated by a giant meteor.
A Tsunami can travel at a speeds of about 500 miles or 805 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as a jet plane.
In 2004,the indian ocean Tsunami was caused by an earthquake with the energy of 23,000 atomic bombs. After the earthquake, killer waves radiating from the epicenter slammed into the coastline of 11 countries. The final death toll was 283,00.Scientist believe that an asteroid struck the indian ocean about 4,800 years ago.The Tsunami the resulted is theorized to have been approximately 600 feet (180 m) high.
Of the three major oceans, only the Pacific Ocean has an integrated multinational tsunami warning system. There was no tsunami warning system in the Indian Ocean in 2004, though experts had previously recommended one be installed.Because of its long history of devastating tsunamis, Japan had the most advanced tsunami warning system in the world prior to the 2011 tsunami, which consisted of more than 1,500 seismometers and more than 500 water-level gauges.

What to do During a Tsunami

If you are at ground level during a tsunami, get to the highest and sturdiest point possible. If you are at home, before you go, turn off any appliances. If you are on a beach during a tsunami warning, do not wait for the waves to come. Immediately move to a higher and sturdier point. If you are on a boat in the ocean during a tsunami, do not try to dock your boat at a harbor or dock. The waves could slam your boat into the dock and cause damage to both. As long as you are in the deep ocean (>100) when a tsunami is coming, you should stay there and wait for the tsunami to pass you.

Small tsunamis can do damage as well. Tsunami is a japanese word meaning harbour (tsu) wave (nami). When tsunamis are near the coast, they slow down but increase in height. About 80% of the tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire.Tsunamis can travel as fast as 5000 miles per hour, without being noticed and can cross the entire ocean in less than a day.The places with the greatest risk of tsunami are Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, Alaska and California.the indian ocean tsunami that took place in December 2004 was estimated to have energy of 23,000 atom bombs. It killed around 283,000 people.People who live in coastal areas, upon experiencing extremely strong earthquakes should be aware that a tsunami is likely to occur.A mega tsunami has very huge waves and has occurred in Alaska in 1958. Surprisingly only two people died.Scientists predict that the next mega tsunami will occur Canary island and will cause damage upto American coastal cities like Boston Miami and new York with waves as high as 100 feet.
