One of the boys likes dolls and the other boy likes trucks. Despite their different interests they compromise and find a way to play together

Personal Response

I really liked this book! I think that the message behind the book is a great message that can be very beneficial for kids to hear and understand. I like how both of the boys in the book were very different and unique in their own way. Many aspects of this book show that we are all different and that’s okay! We don’t all need to look, act and like the same things. The illustrations really helped to express the message of the story as well which I appreciated

Curricular Connections

I think that this book would be a great book to introduce to younger age students (K-2nd) at the beginning of the year. I feel that this book would help students learn to compromise as well as understanding that our differences make us unique and to embrace our differences! This book could be helpful when talking about recess play as well.

"El Deafo"

Personal Response:

I really enjoyed reading El Deafo! I think it had a good message behind it and would be beneficial for students to read. El Deafo has a central theme on friendship and finding your way to fit in. All of us have experienced these feelings of just trying to fit in and connect with others. I love the illustrations and think that they really added to the story and tied everything together nicely. With Cece having hearing aids I think that so much can be learned just from that and can also be refreshing for readers that have similar experiences to her.

Analysis:

#1 Can you find the following elements in El Deafo: panels, word balloons, sound effects, motion lines, narration, and background colors? If you take away any of these, who do you lose?

Many of these elements are present within El Deafo and important to the overall story. Taking away one of these elements would affect the other elements as well. For example if you took away the panels the story would be confusing to follow and understand. If the background colors were taken away the story wouldn't have as much meaning, impact or emotion to it. It is important that these elements are present so that the story can be fully understood and enjoyed.

#2 Graphic novels use both words and images. Pick a page and think through what you learn from just the words. Then think about what you learn from just the images. Are they telling you the same information, or are they giving you different information? How do they work together?

I picked page 21! From just thinking through the words you learn so much. The words help you as the reader understand what Cece is feeling in the overwhelming moment of getting and wearing her hearing aid and how it looks. When you just look at the images it is maybe a bit harder to understand exactly what is going on due to not having context. With just one the understanding is different. Both words and images are so important because they are connected and help to create a whole picture and understanding.

Literacy Activity:

I think that a fun activity for students to do based on El Deafo would be to have each student determine something that makes them unique. Have the students draw it and write a blurb on it. Then share and compare and contrast with the class and further discuss how even though we are all different we all belong!

I interviewed three students from my moms 2nd grade class. I interviewed two boys and one girl by random pick! I chose to do this as my inquiry project because I think it is so interesting to hear about others' opinions, feelings and experiences with reading. Everyone is unique and has a different thoughts and experiences which is so special. I was especially interested because I feel like younger kids have such different opinions, feelings and experiences than college students like us do. Although their answers may have been brief, the conversation with them was so fun and interesting. I really enjoyed interviewing these students and could see their light and love for learning and reading.
