Though it may be hard to imagine life without electronics and you may feel as though technology is been a necessary part of life, many electronics, Apple products specifically, are relatively new. First some background information on the computer/electronic industry. In 1939, the first calculator was invented by George Stiblitz. Not long after the first computers, the Mark Series, were invented at Harvard in 1944. A few years later, in 1976, a big landmark in the history of computers occurred since it was the birth of Apple, founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne. Not long after in 1976 The first Apple product was released, which was a huge landmark due to it being their first product released. The Apple I consisted of a base primarily made of wood with some keyboard-like buttons on the front. Soon after their first product release, in 1977 Apple proceeded to release their next product, the Apple II which consisted of a plastic-like base and keys on the front. Then Apple introduced the first Macintosh in 1984, which was much more productive than past computer products due to its high storage and it being able to hold several major computer programs. A little more than a decade later in 1998, Apple released another major product, the Imac which was somewhat related to the Macintosh. Not long after, Apple released the first Iphone which was a huge success in both the Apple industry and the electronics industry as a whole.

Since Apple releases new products nearly every year, people feel the need to buy the latest technology, even if their older devices still function properly. This leads to waste of valuable resources along with people wasting their money on products that are unnecessary for them. Due to the nature of phones and other electronics, and many apps located on these devices that are easily accessible, people often end up becoming addicted to them and that creates other issues since having such dependency on an electronic can result in mental health problems. Some evidence of negative effects on mental health due to electronics are, 47% of Americans admit that they are addicted to their phone, not to mention that the average American checks their phone 352 times a day. Since Apple is so popular and has been known to have good working conditions, some people might not believe it when they are told Apple still has some issues, specifically with working conditions. For example, there have been instances where the conditions for their workers have been questioned, for example when a video was released that showed an exhausted Apple employee who proceeded to collapse on her desk from being so tired.

Since Apple is very popular, they produce many products, many of which require resources that are extremely harmful for the environment such as lithium which requires about 2.2 million liters of water in order to produce a single ton of lithium. Because many people are not properly disposing of their older devices, we end up wasting many valuable resources in the electronics such as platinum and gold that could have been recycled and made into new electronics or other useful items. According to Make Use Of, Apple reported that 70% of their carbon emissions come from manufacturing alone. This leads to extreme negative effects on our environment, since greenhouse gasses are so bad for the planet. Due to people buying technology that primarily consists of non renewable resources, we are running out of these valuable resources faster which causes many issues, especially for the many places where we get the resources from, such as gold that we get from Peru and copper that we get from Chille.

When apple was released it gained significant popularity over the years, and has opened up many more jobs, around 2 million jobs have been opened up for workers across all 50 states, due to Apple's growth in popularity and its importance in the economy. Since Apple frequently releases many new products and has been known to take away certain features on some products, this negatively impacts personal finances due to people having to spend even more money so that they can buy products that work with the devices they have purchased, for example how Apple took away the old headphone jack on iphones which forces people to spend their money by either buying an adaptor or airpods, a newer more expensive apple product. Due to Apple having many of their factories located in places like China, India, and Vietnam along with others, the labor is much cheaper for the Apple company.

The Problem of Apple and What We Can Do To Solve It

Though many issues can come from electronics and more specifically the Apple company, I feel that a main problem is the contentious waste of the nonrenewable resources that electronic devices contain, and the fact that many people don't properly dispose of their old electronics and that many people waste money and resources by buying unneeded products. A solution to this ongoing issue would be to recycle or sell older electronics instead of just throwing them away, and to only buy new electronics if necessary. Due to many electronics consisting of these nonrenewable resources that many people don't know how to properly dispose of, companies such as Amazon and organizations such as ERI (Electronic Recyclers International) have stepped forward to help create a solution in this ongoing issue of electronic waste by educating people on how to properly dispose of their electronics and even providing ways for people to send them their older electronics so that the companies they send them to can reuse the materials. Since Apple is such a big company and many people are passionate about the environment, Apple is trying to take steps to resolve this on going issue of waste by making their company more environmentally friendly, such as them reducing the amount of plastic used in their packing, for example how in 2015 21% of their packing was plastic but recently in 2022, only 4% of their packing is plastic. While Apple is trying to make some positive changes, there is still lots of room for improvement.
