Jonas- The main character. He is Lily's older brother. Jonas is 11 years old, but the 12 year ceremony was coming up. He is nervous about what job he will be assigned to.
Lily- Jonas's 7, almost 8 year old younger sister.
Mother- Works for the law,  helps Jonas.
Father- Works as a nurturer, very understanding regarding Jonas.
     Other Characters
Asher- Jonas's best friend
Gabriel-the weak baby that father takes care of and nurtures and spends the nights at Jonas's house.
Fiona-a girl that Jonas likes, very quiet, polite, and shy
Larissa- Old women in elderly home, Jonas bathes her and talks to Jonas about releasings.

1. Gabriel is the name of the struggling baby that Jonas dad watches over. Gabriel has growth issues and is not maturing as fast as the other babies.
2.  You have to be a nine in order to own a bike
3.  Jonas' dad tells him about this ceremony when he became a twelve
4. Jonas father loved being with and taking care of newborn children
5. After the ceremony of the twelve, age does not matter
Chapter  4
1.  Jonas meets Asher at the Old People Home where he also sees Fiona, the girl he likes.
2. Jonas helped clean an old lady named Larissa.
3. A rule is that no one should look at another's nakedness unless they are the elderly or newborn babies
Chapter 5
1. In the morning you have to tell your family your dream, and this starts when you are 3

-last year, a plane crashed illegally
-the pilot was in training that lost control
-for some reason, jonas feels weird about the plane crash 
-jonas feels scared for the assignment ceremony
-he took an amazing apple and got called out for it
-during dinner he shared his feelings with his parents
- the family has a ritual of sharing thoughts at dinner
-his parents told him about their ceremonies and their experiences
-they comfort him for the ceremony
-jonas went to bed
- jonas had a strange dream where he wanted phiona to get into the bathtub in the house of the old without clothes, even though it was against the rules
-it ended up being a stirring
-in the rule book it said that a stirring had to be reported and treated
-he had to take pills
-it was about time for the ceremonies to start
- he got anxious about the ceremony
-while waiting, asher tell jonas stories about people who did not get the job they wanted or should have gotten
-he watched the ceremony, getting more anxious as it went on
-the new twelves started getting called up
-they finished and now it was his group's turn

-two-inger- birthmother (unhonorable job)
-three-isaac-instructor of the sixes
-four-asher-got a long speech- assistant director of recreation
*asher could not speak well when he was little
*wanted a snack but said smack
*definitely not a instructor of the threes
-eighteen-fiona- caretaker of the old
- it was 19 now- jonas
-the announcer skipped him
- everyone was startled and jonas felt embarrassed
-kept skipping over jonas
-after they reached the last person, the announcer claimed that she did not make a mistake
-jonas had not been ASSIGNED a job, he had been selected for a special job
-jonas is the receiver of memory
- the prior selection for this job failed
-current one is old
-jonas must not fail
-receiver-in-training is not observed, like other jobs
-prepared by current receiver
-jonas was intelligent, had integrity, was courageous, had wisdom
-the training involved gives physical pain
-capacity to see beyond is a major attribute to a receiver, no one understands exactly what it is
-jonas did not know what it was and thought that he did not have it
-he was about to say no, when all of the doubt changed, just like the apple
-crowd started chanting "jonas" over and over
-this gave his gratitude and pride
-also, he was fearful because he did not know what was to come
-he now felt different
-the failed receiver was a girl
-she was prohibited to talk about and her name was banned from being used on new children
-when she failed, she got released
- no one knows what being released actually is
-jonas's rule list
1. go immediately at the end of school hours each day to the annex entrance behind the house of the old and present yourself to the attendant
2. go immediately to your dwelling at the end of training hours each day
3. from this moment, you are exempt from rules governing rudeness. you may ask questions at any citizen and will get answers.
4. do not discuss your training with any other member of the community, including parents and elders.
5.from this moment, you are prohibited from dream-telling.
6. except for illness or injury unrelated to training, do not apply for any medication.
7. you are permitted to apply for release.
8. you may lie
- he was stunned
-he was scared he was going to lose everything
-the receiver returns all of the memories of the world
-jonas did not know what anything was including snow
-the trainer transmitted the memory of snow to jonas
-jonas was put through terrible pain when he broke his bone in a memory
-jonas threw out the pills for stirrings
-the failed receiver's name was rosemary and she had gotten overwhelmed and applied for release
-jonas's father released the twin
-releasing is done when someone fills a syringe with a chemival and puts it into a vein
-releasing is killing
-jonas was upset
-jonas and the giver made a plan for Jonas to escape
-the nught of jonas's escape, he learned that gabe was to be released that morning
-when he left he took gabe with him
-he had been away for several days now
-search planes came everyday, and tried to detect warmth to find humans, so jonas used a memory to make him and gabe cold every time he heard the engine
