Topic: Why it is important to demonstrate various communication skills when teaching

Educational context: Further education

Target learners: For students attending communications module in the education and training course (5M3635) in Whitehall college of further education for 1 year.

Learning design approach: ABC learning design

Timing: 60 - 90 minutes, fully online asynchronous session

Session learning outcomes:

At the end of this session students will be able to:

Demonstrate various communication skills needed to teach
They will be able to identify why it is important to use a range of different communication skills when teaching
they will know when to use the right form of communication depending on the person, place and subject
The students will be able to use appropriate non-verbal and visual communications

1. Acquisition activity

Aim: Introduce to students why using a variety of communications when teaching is extremely important.

Start by asking students what they know themselves about using different communication skills to interact with different people and then continue using Google slides to give the students an overview of why it is important.

Timing: 20 minutes

2. Investigation activity

Aim: To find examples of different communication skills.

students will be arranged in to groups of 5 and they will have to find the different forms of communications e.g. speaking, hand gestures etc. They will input their answers onto a shared padlet.

Timing: 10 minutes

3. Discussion activity

Aim: Group discussion of communication examples.

Students in their groups will now discuss the communication examples they have found, and give an example of a scenario where they can use each one.

Timing: 10 minutes

4. Acquisition activity 2

Aim: watch a video giving overview on communication skills, why it is important to use range of different skills, when to use the right form, and how to use non- verbal and visual communications.

Timing: 10 minutes

5. Practice and Collaborate

Aim: To make a short video

Students in their groups will produce a video on communication skills and why they think it is important to use various skills. Video will only be 5 - 10 minutes.

Timing: 30 mins

Resources: Storyboard template, Google slides and the video overview.

6. Wrap and check knowledge
