In this community, families begin when a man or a woman applies for a partner. A special committee chooses a match for them. Once paired, the couple must live together and show they are compatible for three years before they can apply to receive a child.

Children are not born into families. Instead, they are born in special places called Birthing Centers by women known as Birthmothers. After birth, the babies are cared for in a Nurturing Center until December of that year. Then, they are placed with a family chosen by the committee.

Each family is allowed to have one boy and one girl. When the children grow up and leave home, the parents also move out. They go to live with other adults who no longer have children at home, and they are no longer involved in their children's lives.

In Jonas's community, honesty is very important as it can tell people what the person is feeling, this may be important because people need to know what to improve in the community if there is anything bad.

They may have to say everything that they experience as it could help the elders possibly 'control' the community. Another reason they might have to say anything and everything they dream about is so parents know when the 'stirrings' occur.

Maybe stirrings are dreams and the elders want to get rid of them with pills because they don't want people to get any bad ideas from those dreams?

Jonas and the other people in the community are exposed to a very limited amount of information, because they have never seen anything other than what is in their community. This is proven true because when The Receiver tells Jonas about snow, Jonas is absolutely clueless about what this is.

There is safety in the community, but not enough freedom. No one in the community is allowed to go outside, meaning that they don't know what is outside, and no one from outside has ever come inside.

For example, in Jonas's 'perfect' community, he is lacking knowledge. In chapter 10, The Receiver asks Jonas is he knows what downhill is, but he shook his head. This implies that no one in the community has much experience, even though they have safety.

Which is then followed up by explaining that Jonas has never thought of lying, and that the rules did not state that he had to lie, so he would continue being honest.

At first, it seems like a perfect world, but Jonas learns that without individuality, people can’t feel real emotions or make their own choices. When he starts seeing colour and feeling things through memories, he realises how important it is to be different and make your own decisions. The book shows that being the same might be safe, but being yourself is what makes life meaningful.
