For me, International Mindedness means to think of the world as one and all people in it as a family member. Just as one respects the individual differences and personal ethos of family members, we do the same by respecting cultural differences between people and belief systems. This entails collaboration and mindful discussions of multiple perspectives.

This, for me it means the privilege of being able to have perceptivity to understand the cultural differences of people, be an active member who works to make the society better, and who works to create a better, greener, happier future.

Many issues of sustainability, pollution and scarcity of resources are concerns we share as a world as most of the times, the source of the issue is one area / nation, while the ones who pay the cost of it are other nations.
Hence, it is necessary, for students to become global citizens to understand perspectives and work on solutions through mature diaglogue while respecting cultural differences

When we discuss a particular concept or phenomenon in class, I always make it a point to bring in case studies.
While being good starting points for discussions, these also help to develop a mindset that is sensitive to others. It also helps students learn from the success stories of others, as well as the times when the desired outcomes were not reached.
India had the 'Chipko Movement' when tribal people, with no formal education stepped up to preserve their Biodiversity and created history by making the Government create new laws to conserve forest areas! The world is filled with such examples!

Again, I feel, using real life examples is what helps students understand how things work in real life.
Students get to see conflict resolution, mature international dialogue aids in bringing about a solution that helps all people in the world.
One such example is the ozone hole over Australia, where the pollution was caused by other nations, but the brunt was borne by Australia. A lot of effort was put in, internationally to get CFCs banned, and the result? The ozone hole has almost fully recovered!

I try to include several activities in class where perspectives are involved.
One such activity was the PILOT WHALE HUNTING FESTIVAL.
The students looked into:
1. Cultural significance
2. Ecological position of the pilot whale
3. Effects of this festival
4. Importance of this festival to the local community.

The students researched all of this and then gave their own view if the festival was justified in being celebrated today in the 21st century. There was no right or wrong answer to this.
