Space exploration served as another dramatic arena for Cold War competition. On October 4, 1957, a Soviet R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile launched Sputnik (Russian for “traveler”), the world’s first artificial satellite and the first man-made object to be placed into the Earth’s orbit.
In 1959, the Soviet space program took another step forward with the launch of Luna 2, the first space probe to hit the moon. In April 1961, the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first person to orbit Earth, traveling in the capsule-like spacecraft Vostok 1.
That same year, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a public order creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a federal agency dedicated to space exploration in 1958.

Apollo 8 was originally intended to be an Earth-orbital test of the Lunar Module. However, completion of the Lunar Module was behind schedule and NASA wanted to maintain its launch schedule with the goal of attempting the first lunar landing in summer 1969.
By early 1967, the United States appeared to be winning the race to the moon. Then came disaster. During a test of the command module on a launchpad at Cape Kennedy, during which the cabin was filled with pure oxygen, a fire broke out and killed the three Apollo 1 astronauts — Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Roger Chaffee and Ed White.

The choice to spend Christmas Eve in lunar orbit was made because that was the time of optimal lighting conditions for surveying the Apollo Landing Site 1, which was being considered as the prime target for the first lunar landing. In addition to surveying this landing zone, the crew made geologic observations of pre-selected features on both the near side and far side of the Moon, took stereo images of the lunar surface, and assessed the range of lighting conditions that would permit a safe landing in the Lunar Module.

The Mustang's grand debut came on April 14, 1964 for the press and April 17, 1964 for the general public.
While the production numbers for the 1964 1/2 Mustang aren't clear, Ford ended up producing a total of 121,538 Mustangs in 1964
The winning design came from Joe Oros’ design team. Though the design used elements from the whole team, Gale Halderman’s design is clearly the basis of the first-generation Mustang.

The very first 1964.5 Mustang was sent as a display to a dealership. Serial number 5F08F100001 was a white convertible Mustang. For Captain Stanley Tucker, it was love at first sight.


As soon as he saw the Mustang at his local dealer, he offered a generous $4,300 for it and agreed to let it stay on display for a while. Unfortunately, the pre-production Mustang was never intended for sale.
