Pilot:
The story is set in the United States in the fifties. During the summer Danny Zuko (John Travolta), the leader of the Thunderbirds (also known as TBirds) a band of students from Rydell High School, meets Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John), a young and naive Australian girl. The two fall in love, but Sandy has to go back to Australia for the holidays: the two boys must therefore say goodbye, swearing eternal love.
Sandy's programs, however, suddenly change: he unknowingly enrolls in the same school as Danny and there he meets a group of students called Pink Ladies (Betty - known as Rizzo, Frenchy, Marty and Jan) with whom he makes friends. Both Danny and Sandy, unaware of being closer to the expected, better participate in their respective friends in their story, singing the famous Summer Nights. Sandy tells his version of the facts and comes from his companions, on the other hand in the story not to spoil his reputation.
When Sandy reveals to the new friends the boy's name, Rizzo, the leader of the Pink Lady, we had a story with Danny himself, he is envious and wants to put him in difficulty in front of his friends organizing a "casual" meeting between the two. At the sight of Sandy, Danny, having the reputation of a womanizer, is forced, a reluctantly, a bold and indifferent display in front of his friends Kenickie, Doody, Sonny and Putzie. Her attitude hurts enormously. Sandy, after a sleepover, expresses her mood with the celebrity Hopelessly Devoted to You. After apologizing to her girlfriend, Danny resumes dating Sandy, although initial problems do not they disappear completely.
Meanwhile, the school is engaged in organizing a large dance competition, which will be broadcast live on national television: all the students of the school are very busy to prepare for the event. On the day of the evening, published by the famous conductor Vince Fontaine, all the boys go wild with rumba, rock and boogie-woogie steps. Danny and Sandy shows up in pairs and shows comments for the final victory, but they are separated again: Sonny grabs Sandy, while Danny is yanked by Cha-Cha DiGregorio, with whom, in the past, he had had a casual relationship, and with her she concludes the final dance and wins the race. Sandy feels betrayed and leaves the party disgusted.
In an attempt to reconcile, Danny takes Sandy to a drive-in (where you can see the trailer for the 1958 horror film Fluido mortale, the year in which the story is set) where he asks her to be his girlfriend, giving her a ring. During the evening Danny tries to touch her, but Sandy, feeling forced to do something she doesn't want, runs away, leaving him alone. At this point Danny shows what he feels with the song Sandy. Meanwhile, Sonny, informed by Marty, puts out a rumor about a presumed pregnancy by Rizzo, who had had a story with Kenickie who, once the rumor comes, thinks he did it.
The Thunderbirds have an enemy band, the Scorpions, with which they compete in a car race. Kenickie, a close friend of Danny, should drive for the Thunderbirds, but has an accident and faints. Danny takes his place and, despite the rival trying to cheat anyway, he manages to win the race.
Sandy, who attended the race, at that point understands Danny's rebellious nature and decides to get back into the game, abandoning the role of "good girl". In the same way Danny is thinking of becoming a "good boy", which he thinks best suited to Sandy's tastes, starting to do athletics and abandoning "bully" clothes. At the New Year's Eve party, a new Sandy appears to the stunned, more gritty and determined Danny, with curly hair, dressed in leather and with a cigarette, wanting to get closer to the way he is of his beloved and ready to win him back. On the notes of the song You're the One That I Want the two understand that they are made for each other. Later Rizzo tells Kenickie that he is not pregnant and the two make peace. Thunderbirds and Pink Ladies, once promised never to give up even after school, sing We go together and, in the end, Danny and Sandy fly away on a sparkling roadster, greeted by festive friends.
