Significance: The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand served as the spark that set off World War I. Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia after Serbia failed to met Austria-Hungary's ultimatum led to a chain reaction of declaration of wars by various European countries due to alliance system that dominated the European continent.
