A Hard Man Is Good to Find – The Photographers Gallery

Curated By Alistair O'Neill, professor of Fashion History and Theory at Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts London)

I visited the Photographers Gallery today to view serveral of the collections that they currently have on display. I was interested in the display called “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” which explores the post war (World War 2) queer culture and the creation of art during a time in which it had been made illegal. I liked how it tracked the movement through various artist around London in areas such as Brixton, Euston, Portobello and the area between Wellington Barracks and Chelsea to name just a few. I found it interesting how the artists pushed and boundaries between what was legal and what remained illegal in an ever-changing culture. I also found it interesting that not all the models identified as queer but became icons for a culture that was still being restricted by the government.

I would recommend visiting the Photographers Gallery and viewing all their collections to anyone with an interest in photography.
