My favorite thing to do in this class is to look at treatments and the different approaches. I like to and I think I have done well with finding weaknesses and strengths when it comes to modern talk therapy. Furthermore, in the activity in which we looked at what helps people who have mental illnesses, I looked deeper at what my classmates brought to discussions and actively engaged with their ideas. Lastly, I am proud that I have been able to complete the work on time and log in at least 5 times a week to keep up with the rest of the class.

I think this week I kind of spaced out my work really well with all of my other work in school. It was a busy week with many tests, so I allotted specific times to when this GOA would be a priority. I think that this week we looked a lot into talk therapy and how that can be beneficial as a specific type of therapy and we are able to describe now several of the treatment types. In the zoom call we looked at three very different types of therapies and we were able to compare and contrast them. On this call, in my group specifically we all talked and got along super well, even though Ms. Ahina couldn't make it. This week I spent a lot of time planning out when stuff would get done, so in that sense I have become a more independent learner without relying upon others for help with planning.

This week was fairly difficult for me, not because of the actual material, but simply because I had some things going on in my life that took time away from some of my work. However, I was able to work around it by organizing my schedule and completing tasks during my free period. Regarding the actual material that we learned this week, I believe that I have definitely become more informed about the different types of therapies such as talk therapy and rational emotive behavioral therapy.

This week we talked a lot about different treatments and ways that people can support one another. I loved reading about all the different support systems that people have at their schools and being able to connect those to the podcasts we listened to about how different types of therapy can be effective was super interesting. I tried to focus on asking questions both to myself and my peers that maybe connected to past units, like how different therapies have evolved and differ across the world. It was also really cool to talk to 3 other people on Zoom, because we all listened to different videos, so getting those other perspectives was super cool. I'm really proud of myself for always staying on top of the deadlines, which I think is due to the fact that I just have our course page always open on my browser, so it's always in front of me when I'm on my computer, reminding me to check into Canvas for any assignments.

This unit I think I started to understand biological, cognitive, and sociocultural modes of treatment pretty well. The videos were the most helpful in getting me to understand the differences and then when I was answering other people's questions about the videos I was able to really contrast and describe exactly how the treatments are used and when they work or don't work. I think I did pretty well at collaborating with peers who are not on campus with me, during the Gloria project. I enjoy hearing what my classmates have to say and I find it really interesting to be able to connect their ideas to the discussion. For the discussion about Gloria, both Crawford and I watched the same video so we did have a lot of similar ideas, but even when we didn’t it was a really go way to talk about it because we were able to understand what the other was saying about the video because we had seen it too. I think I did pretty good with organizing my time and tasks for this unit, considering I was on break. I did turn in my homework on time every day, even though I did not get ahead this week. I also made sure to put in enough time to the homework every day to make it solid work.

I feel like I learned a ton this unit and grew a lot as an independent learner. After watching the crash course videos, I really understand the differences between biomedical and psychotherapy, which also has helped me be able to differentiate between the biological, cognitive, and sociocultural factors that can lead to mental illness. I understand what treatments are commonly used and when they are used. In terms of collaborating with peers who are not on campus, I think I did quite well. I left comments where I was supposed to and contributed in the video chat, however, I do think I could improve in not doing just the bare minimum. I could comment more and reply to comments as well. I have done well with managing my time and getting everything done by the due dates this unit!

I think the most helpful exercise in furthering my understanding of clinical approaches to mental health treatment this week was watching the mock therapy session that "Gloria" had with the different Doctors. Seeing the way that each clinician interacted with the same patient was extremely interesting, and made it easy to compare the different appraoches to psychotherapy. After talking about the video that I was assigned to watch in the zoom meeting, I felt much more confident in my knowledge of the various techniques used in psychotherapy, and I feel satisfied in what I learned. Overall, this assignment was my favorite of the week.

I totally feel the growth in my understanding of abnormal psychology and empathy since the beginning of Unit 2. I really think that I have learned a lot about the different methods of treating mental health disorders. From watching and discussing with teammates about Gloria's videos, as well as watching and taking notes on the Crash Course videos, I really feel like I understand all of the different ways that people can be treated for their mental illnesses. For example, in our group discussion about Gloria, we had all watched different videos except for Allison and I. It was really interesting for us to go around and talk about how all of the different factors, especially social, played into Gloria's interactions with the different therapists and how it affected her mental health problem. I also think that it really helped build my skills in communicating and working with people who live far from me and I don't see every day. In that group conversation, we would share our responses to the questions, and then build off of each others' responses and ask each other questions to really nail down and build on each others' knowledge.

This unit has definitely targeted at improving some of the competencies. I think that many of our assignments were targeted at understanding the difference between the biological, cognitive, and sociocultural modes. Learning about talk therapy and the DSM helped me open my mind to further understanding how treatment is looked at. The crash course videos were also super relevant to everything we were learning. The questions that I developed after all of the learning this week were often answered through other assignments. I also got to learn so much from the Gloria talk therapy homework. I was really impressed by all of the information I gathered this week. I've also noticed how much time we spend on discussions and slack, both of which are used to help us work together as a class and bounce ideas and questions off of one another. I think that has definitely helped me gain my footing in the class.

Unit 2 has allowed me to learn more about various treatments in the mental health world than I ever imagined before starting this course. Starting this unit by sharing different methods of helping others even in our local communities allowed me to connect how the three methods of treatment for mental health can apply to our daily lives. I feel like I have gained an understanding of each biological, cognitive, and sociocultural methods, and am able to apply them in my everyday life now. From comforting friends to even helping in outreaching to less fortunate communities, each of these methods have taught me something new on how to empathize with those suffering and help them get back on the right path. I think the meeting held over Zoom was something extremely unique, unlike anything I have done before and pushed my shyness to a level I never have experienced before. Being on Zoom forces the participants to look at one another at the same time, and engage in a conversation together rather than being able to tune out in bigger discussions in person. Each person in my meeting brought forth extremely insightful points and critical questions I would not thought of by myself, and our different cultures also make the discussion even more engaging. The online learning of GOA has also forced myself to be independent, keeping track of my own time (something I have struggled with in the past). I also like how I can complete the workload in time that is fit to myself, rather than being forced to going to class at extremely early hours. Even though I did get sick this week, I believe I still did do a good job completing all my work on time and finishing the module before the next one started.

I think that Unit 2 has definitely allowed me to reflect more deeply on the 3 modes for treating mental health. The videos that we watched at the beginning of the Unit definitely allowed me to understand these approaches more, and now, I realize that I encounter these 3 influences in my everyday life. I am much more aware about how the cognitive, sociocultural, and biological approaches shape who people are. I also found the video about Gloria to be super interesting, and I especially liked the zoom conversation ww had about the different therapy styles. The assignments aside, I'm definitely struggling a lot more to balance my GOA homework and my schoolwork. Coming into this course, I had an idea of how Global Online Academy classes worked because I took one before, but I didn't know that we would be doing so many more things in this class. For the next unit, I want to manage my time in a better way, and hopefully, by the end of the course, not only will I be able to manage my time well, but I'll have a good understanding on the roots of mental health.

Unit 2 has definitely allowed me to fully engage with our coursework, specifically in understanding cognitive, biological, and sociocultural methods of treatment. The videos we watched, especially the two videos that indepthly explained the premise for different types of treatment and therapy, especially opened my eyes to not only the variety of treatment methods out there, but also to the benefits and risks/drawbacks of each treatment. Most importantly, this unit helped me grow as a student as it forced me to look at these three "distinct" areas of psychological treatment and then understand them individually, and in relation to one another. While I did grow as a learner in relation to the actual content, I struggled immensely this week in staying on top of my schedule and turning in my assignments on time. This unit pushed me to be more accountable for my time and that I need to be more responsible in managing my work with my other school work, as well as my personal life and health. I hope next unit I can better engage with the unit on time, rather than fall behind as I did in this unit.
