The Finnish past

To me, one of the most interesting facts about Finland's history is, that Finland once had a king. This was right after Finland got it's independency, and the government was debating wether the country should be a kingdom or a democracy. They ended up choosing a king for Finland from Germany, Fredrik Kaarle. Right after he got chosen, Germany lost the first world war, and he had to give up the crown. Fredrik Kaarle never had the time to even visit Finland during his time of be the King of Finland. After this Finland decided to become a democracy.

As in many other Western European countries, compared to the population of the country, also Finland has a big amount of elderly people. These are people who were born after the second world war, when people had lots of children after family dad's had come back home from war. Now taking care of these elderly people has become a challenge for Finland, but it seems like the situation hasn't become too bad, and we've been able to handle it surprisingly well.

Finland's economy

I want to believe Finland's economy is getting stronger and stronger.

Right now Finland is one of the best startup countries in the world. We have so many possibilities here, and above all, it's quite safe to start a business in here because of all the government subsidies that startups can get.

I also believe a great deal in tourism. This winter, 2017-2018, Finavia has made it's new records of passengers traveling to Helsinki airport, and lots of celebrities have gotten interested of Lapland's winter.

I think Finnish design is very much appreciated through the world. I've been working in design companies in the US, and Finnish products seemed to be used there a lot more than people think. Quality of our products is extremely good, and that is what counts nowadays. People want to preserve the environment. They want products that have been made with a small carbon footprint. This is what is Finland's specialty in design.

I'm a 22-year old girl, originally from Western Finland. When I was little, we drew these layouts of our dream houses with my friend. It's kind of ironic that both of us ended up studying the same industry, just in different towns. I guess this already tells you that my industry is interior architecture, but in our school I got a wonderful chance to study also furniture design that was included to the program. So far it has given a great addition to the interior side! I'm at the very end of my studies, graduating summer 2018.

As a person I'm super social, can't stand much being alone. I love animals and especially traveling. Nature is important to me, I do running and hiking quite a bit.

Continuous traveling has been a part of my life for the past four years. My boyfriend lives in the US, so I've needed to travel there two or three times a year. Also because of time differences, my time has been very scheduled, so I can't wait to move there at the end of 2018 and start a normal life.

Visit to Reposaari, Western Finland

I paid a visit to Reposaari, which nowadays is a part of Pori. Reposaari is located on the very coast, and I guess one could say it's like a small fisherman's village. At least it has the charm! Most buildings in Reposaari are sweet, old, wooden houses. Also the oldest restaurant in Finland is located there. I think the most famous thing about Reposaari are it's beaches, that aren't normal sand beaches, but there are big rocks that meet the sea. it's an old village, and there are so many beautiful and historical places (like old trenches and a camping centre with a little duck pond) to see there! I definitely recommend visiting there, if you're ever nearby Yyteri beach for example!

Before my third degree studies, I went to school in Pori, western Finland. In middle school I got interested in arts, so I decided I wanted to go to a high school that has a wide range of art classes. I went to Western Pori's high school and performed an art diploma there. I wasn't completely sure where to go for college, but I happened to get to KYAMK (XAMK) to study interior architecture and furniture design. I'm sure that at some point of my life I will continue my studies to either a masters degree, or try something a bit different, maybe fashion or that art history.

What comes to work, I've been working in a flower shop during rush times like Christmas and mother's day. I've worked there since I was quite young, around fourteen. When I was in high school, I worked at the same time in Sigrid Jusélius mausoleum in Pori. There I was able to develop my english skills because of all foreign visitors. I liked working there a lot, because the ambiance in the mausoleum was a bit spooky, there was lots of history involved and on the walls of mausoleum, there were Axel Gallen-Kallela's frescos.

Experience from my own industry I have gotten from three companies so far. During the second summer of my studies I did an internship in Habitar Design, in Chicago. It wasn't a very big design company, mainly doing residential work. My second internship was also in Chicago at Kara Mann Design. Kara Mann was a bit bigger company, about 20 people in Chicago office and they also had a New York office for about 10 people.Their work was mainly residential, but there were a couple commercial works going on too. Right now I'm working in Pori in Sandark Oy. It's a very small company of two people (including me). I started in Sandark as an intern, and now I will be stying there helping out part-time. Right now the work that actually gets me the money, is hardware store, Kodin Terra where I started a few weeks ago.

Every man's rights are something that was taught for us in elementary school when we were 8-9 years old. The rights tell you how to behave in Finland's nature. What you can and can not do. I remember how we even made trips from school to nearby forests and learned there. 65% of Finland is forest and we are people who like to spend time in the nature, so what would be more important than to learn the nature right and so, that you also respect other people's property.

International trade

In Finland, our international trade is concentrated on wood (especially pine), different kinds of metals, electronics and some chemicals.

During the economic crisis it was easy to notice how it affected to the trade. Some of my close relatives work in copper industry and still a few years ago they were telling all the time how people are laid off again from their jobs. There wasn't enough work, not enough orders. Now that the economic crisis is getting a bit better, one can notice the same thing because of the development of technology. Factories need fewer and fewer people working, and sometimes, especially for a bit older people it's hard to find a new job anymore. Unemployment increases.

As in many other countries, also in Finland people are moving from countryside to cities. My parents just did the opposite a half a year ago and now I have a chance to often go to place where I can relax and where it is quiet.

I don;t know the exact average age of the people who live on these rural areas, but most of my parents neighbors are over 60 years old. The very closest neighbors being a over 90-year-old couple.

If there would ever happen an accident or someone would become sick, it'd take a lot of time to get help there. hopefully there would come some new trend of moving to countryside and revive these areas. Younger families would bring some more safety to these elderly people who don't want to leave their homes.

This won't be a long visit, but there are always things I start missing from Finland

In Finland jobs are important, but they are definitely not the most important thing for anyone. People appreciate so much more time in here. Finnish people want spend their extra with their families or friends and not stress about their work.

In US doing a 12-hour day is just a normal day among others, but if Finland doing even a 10-hour day in considered pretty long, and often people take that extra working time off of some other day.
