The stories and stats where super upsetting to hear that this is happening within a Panhellenic community I am involved with. I’m hoping that having this presentation will help bring awareness to these behaviors and help make a change for those people who may have been experiencing these awful problems.

One day we were choosing songs to play at a date party, one of the songs I loved and represented my culture. One of my sisters whispered behind me “is that even English I don’t want to listen to that” and it really hurt my feelings

I feel really sad honestly. Being apart of a chapter is to be apart of a sisterhood and to hear these stories of sisters being against each other or just being mean to each other is not okay. We join this to belong and feel like we have a group of people to talk and hang out with but when we begin turning against each other for no reason at all it is a huge problem. I hope someday things will change.

It’s awful and made me reflect on some of the behaviors that i’ve been doing and think differently about how some of the girls have been “informing me” about some of the other girls. i think it’s important to let members form their own opinion on the people they meet and to remain humble when forming these opinions. everyone does awful things sometimes and it’s important to remember that everyone is multidimensional and one mistake does not define who they are as a person.

It’s awful. We all joined a sorority to be apart of something, no matter if it was for our philanthropies, our sisters, or just better connects. We all found a group of girls we can be sisters with. But this kind of behavior doesn’t sound like a healthy sister relationship.

It’s really sad to hear these stories. Honestly, I’ve had a really great experience in my chapter so it’s hard to hear that that’s not the case for all. I hear about “mean girl” behavior and assume it’s just people having bad days. However after hearing these stories I’m realizing that some people really do intentionally mean things. It’s making me reflect harder and realizing small day to day interactions can make a really big impact on someone’s membership experience and self confidence.

It’s hard to see and accept the aggression within our community. We preach positivity, love, and support within our chapters, and still negativity seems to be overtaking the good experiences we have. When becoming a member of a chapter, we come in with the expectation that no matter what chapter we are in we will be loved and cared for no matter who we are but hearing these stories we realize not everything is what as it seems.

to hear these stories is incredibly disappointing and disheartening. but what i think is arguably even worse is that i wasn't surprised by these numbers or chapter specific accounts. i understand the gravity of cultural changes, but these changes seem like a no brainer. just be nice. it's not rocket science. women should NEVER feel excluded or less than because of others!

As someone who was on the exec board of a sorority, I heard rumors about myself started through people I thought I was close with and the stories got so far and twisted that I didn't know what to do about it because minds were made up by the time it got back to me:(

I hate to hear that these things are happening. It seems like cliques can be an issue within big groups like sororities, especially when there are new members that do not know anyone yet :(
Common kindness really should not be that difficult for so many people. When a girl is bid on, it is because the active members think she will be great in their sorority and with their active members. It’s unreasonable for that new member to then be excluded when they are supposed to belong and be excited to be in a new group that supposedly wanted them.
