I choose the character Sebastian from The Little mermaid.

I chose this sound because...

The character looks like he is happy, and he is also singing and dancing. So I chose sounds that sound happy and that are higher on the scale instead of sounds that are low and sad.

Why did I choose the notes I chose?

I chose notes that are higher, and faster instead of lower and slower because the character is dancing and is happy. Although in one part the character is sad so then I move the notes an octave lower.

Loud/soft why?

Loud, because then it's more upbeat and exiting to listen too, and matches the character.

Fast/slow, why?

Fast because the character is doing a lot of movement and so the music should match it's actions

Intervals (wide or close) why?

They were close so that the sounds move faster, but still maintain their upbeat sound. Even when it went down an octave, it was still close.

1. What is your movie and your character?

The movie is The little mermaid, and the character is sebastian.

2. Describe in detail what is happening in your scene.

Sebastian was singing 'under the sea' with another crab. They are dancing and singing, and they are playing their "instruments' which are shells.

3. How does your leitmotif connect with the character in your scene and what they are doing?

My leitmotif connects because the characters are singing and dancing, and my leitmotif makes the dancing they are doing. In some parts they are happy so there is happier music, and in some parts they are sad so the music is sadder.

4. How is it potentially different than first leitmotif you wrote?

I think in my first leitmotif I couldn't add a lot of time markers, so there wasn't much variation in the music. This time I added a lot of markers, so there was a lot different sounds which made this leitmotif sound better.

5. Name/describe all of the beats in the film that you hit, and how you reflected that in the music.

The first beat I hit was when the main character came. The second beat was when the main character and another meet, and they play the shells happily, so I included a happy piano sound (I made the notes go higher). Although in the last beat, they were playing the shells, but this time they were sad, so I included the piano and made the notes go down for a sad effect.

6. What are the different sounds/layers/instruments you used, and why did you use it?

I used piano, bells, strings & flutes, and a recording of my guitars. I used these because they created "happy sounds", and when I used more deeper sounds, they created more "sad sounds".

In the beginning it was not that good because I felt like the sounds of the guitar was really loud and I adjusted by playing louder or softer on the guitar. Although later I was able to continue playing the guitar properly.

I was personally happy with me being able to play the chords, and I was able to play all of them all throughout the song.

One thing I personally wish could be improved was the guitar was too loud, so the speaker that it was connected to could be more quieter.

To prepare for next time, I would like to practice in the auditorium before the performance

During the performance I felt good about the guitar, but at the beginning(at 1:17:30) I needed to adjust the sounds so I was not that confident, and it was the best around the middle (around 1:18:32).

For my group song, I learned the fingerpicking technique.

What am I struggling with?

I am struggling with consistently doing practice journals, and doing a good warmup. Name 3 specific steps that I will take to continue improving in music.

1- I will remind myself to do at least 1-2 practice journals a week.

2- I will find different warm ups for the piano and the guitar.

3- When practicing i'll start with a warm up and then record the song I practiced

What feedback did Mr. David give me, and what will I do about it?

I got feedback about doing warm ups on the piano, and exercises for my guitar part for the group song. So the next time I practice piano i'll do scales, and I will try the exercises given for the guitar.

What are some specific successes that you felt like you had for this performance?

I was able to perform our song successfully on the piano (by remembering all the parts and not messing up)

What is at least one thing you would have liked to improve for next time or differently for next time?

For next time something different I would do is have more interesting chords, and create more interesting lyrics or melodies.

Choose one other G8 band performance from that evening. What are some specific thoughts you have about that performance?

Happy Summer performance- I liked the melody and chords of their songs. Their melody and lyrics sounded good and were catchy.

Which ATL skills did you develop in order throughout this unit to play successfully?

Throughout this unit I developed my collaboration and creative thinking skills.

I developed my collaboration skills by working with my group to create lyrics, chords and melodies. We had to communicate with each other about how we wanted our song to sound, and what we wanted it to be about. Then we had to work together to make the melody and practice singing the song. I developed my creative thinking skills by finding good chord progressions, and original melodies.
