The mother, who is not home, posts online videos teaching others how to do "girly" hairstyles. Father breaks gender roles by learning to do his daughter's hair, emphasizing the benefit of escaping stereotypes.
- Hair acts as a symbol of femininity, but mother has cancer (no hair due to chemotherapy). Defiance of gender roles takes place as the mother takes her cap off, revealing her womanhood despite hardship.

Racial Equality Lens -- When facing difficulty with her hair, both the father and daughter contemplate using a hair dryer, which would straighten her curls. This urge highlights the difficulty that comes with embracing one's culture.
