Connection: In placement, the students that were ELL learners definitely do have a lot of knowledge and might just need the extra help articulating their point.
Surprise: The use of SNS at home positively influences the development of the english language and literacy skills.
Question: How can you help students that are ELL develop their own writing identity in primary grades, without access to SNS or other technologies?

Connection: I had a ELL student and we were trying to find ways and spaces where he could participate. I used simple apps like Kahoot & polleverywhere to help. However, he had to write an essay and Ning would have been helpful.
Surprise: How well the students were able to build their social presence with using an tech tool.
Question: One of the struggles I had in the classroom (a both of my placements) was connectivity to various apps and using some platforms. Connection: I had worked with students who were ELL, but at that time use of digital tools wasent common.
Surprise: The experiment that was done in the reading, that most of the students had a great experience using technology.

Connection: I found I had a similar experience whereby whenever students had the opportunity to share their learning or express themselves through an online outlet their responses seemed to be a lot more meaningful.
Surprise: I am both surprised and impressed at how much of a positive impact SNS was able to have on ELL learners and really help to develop a strong online identity.

You cannot place limits on students based on preconceptions.
Connection: I had an ESL boy in my placement and I could defiantly see how he could have been considered an 'outsider' in the classroom from the students to sometimes the teacher not fully believing he can achieve the work.
Surprise: How well SNS assisted ESL students. It helps students construct their thinking in their own ways.
Question: What if you have limited access to technology? A lot of my placement classes didn't have much to work with.

Connection: In my first placement my AT went to a workshop on SNS learning and said it was very interesting but something she is still working to agree with.
Surprise: I think I am still just generally surprised at the overall use in technology in the classroom in compared to my schooling. Is it something that I find myself at a major cross roads with in terms of how much is too much

Connection: Since mainstream teachers do not possess the skills needed to reach and teach these students we need to adapt the use of SNS in the classroom Surprise: Honestly I was surprised with the positive impact SNS have for ELL students and this is something I personally have not thought about before reading this article.

Students who are shy or uncomfortable with social presence in the classroom may be able to build more confidence online. ELL are a good example of this as it let's them have a longer thinking time and could teach themselves

I was interested in how this article suggested SNS being a good place for ELL’s as it provides a place to communicate with less formality that a classroom environment would have and be a good tool for practice.
Connection:In my own placement, we used class dojo which isn’t necessarily a class SNS, but it provided the students with a space to communicate in a more informal manner. Students could use pictures, emojis and short words to describe things they wanted to share in our storyboard. I found even the students who did not necessarily talk much in class were eager to participate on our storyboard.
Suprise:

I was surprised how much the students benefited in the study.
Question:Many sites are blocked in schools. For example, in the YRDSB have many useful website that the kids could use blocked on their devices. How do about encouraging the kids when we don’t have access.

Connection: I had only 1 ELL student over my last two placements. They were able to use the students around them, the internet and similar words to help them understand the work.
