Basic Overview

The integumentary system holds our body together and gives us shape. This system contains the skin, hair, nails, and glands. These things protect our body from foreign and external damage. It is also known for regulating body temperature and provides sensory information. Without the Integumentary system our bodies would not be able to function and we would fall apart.

Functions

Our Integumentary system does more than give our body shape and. Each of its components including the skin, nails, hair, and glands have their own functions.

Skin - The skin is the largest organ of the body and contains three layers including the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. These three layers protect the body against pathogens, UV radiation, and produces vitamin D.

Nails - The nails protect the tips of the fingers and toes and grows continuously. They contain keratin which is a tough protein that helps them grow.

Hair - The hair helps to regulate body temperature and provides protection. Hair growth occurs in cycles while also containing keratin to help with growth.

Glands - There are many glands in the body but there are four in the skin. The sweat glands help cool the body through perspiration. The Sebaceous glands produce oil to give moisture to the skin and hair. The Ceruminous glands protects the ear canal by producing earwax. Finally, the mammary glands produce milk in females.

Skin Cancer: Melanoma

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that develops when melanocytes (the cells that give the skin its tan or brown color) start to grow out of control. It is not a very common type of skin cancer but it grows and spreads very rapidly. They can start anywhere on the skin, but in people with lighter skin color they are more likely to start on the chest and back in men and on the legs in women. Other common sites are the neck and face. People with darkly pigmented skin have a lower risk of melanoma at these sites.

Dermatologist

Dermatologists accurately diagnose and properly treat more than 3,000 diseases of the skin, hair, and nails as well as cosmetic concerns. This career works perfectly with this SOS because of the direct treatment of the integumentary system. To become a dermatologist you have to go through four years of college to earn a bachelor’s degree, four years of medical school to become a medical doctor, a year-long internship in medicine, and three years of residency in dermatology, working alongside experienced doctors and completing 12,000 to 16,000 hours of treating patients. A standard dermatologist can make an annual wage of $327,650, last recorded in 2022.

Bob Marley and his fate of melanoma

Bob Marley was a well known musician that died in 1981 due to a terrible case of melanoma and partly to brain cancer. His rare case of melanoma started under his toenail four years before he died. In people with darker skin, melanoma is normally found inside the mouth, on the tongue, under the fingernails and toenails, and on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Unfortunately, Marley kept refusing the treatment offered to him which led him to his sad fate.
