Similarly to Sojourner Truth, Wells was born into slavery. Later freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, she lost the majority of her family to yellow fever when she was only 16 years old.

She spent most of her life working as a teacher and investigative reporter, documenting lynching and racial violence in the US during the late 1800s and early 1900s. She even travelled internationally, exposing others to what was going on in the US, even if she was often shunned or ignored.

After graduation, Mahoney registered for work as a private-duty nurse. Families that employed Mahoney praised her calm and quiet efficiency. Her professionalism helped raise the status of all nurses. At a time when nurses were often assigned domestic chores as well as nursing duties, she refused to take her meals with household staff. As he reputation spread, Mahoney received requests from patients as far away as New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and North Carolina.

Mahoney was one of the first black members of the organization that later became the American Nurses Association (A.N.A.). When that later organization proved slow to admit black nurses, Mahoney strongly supported the establishment of the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (N.A.C.G.N.), and delivered the welcome address at that organization's first annual convention, in 1909. In that speech, Mahoney recognized the inequalities in nursing education and called for a demonstration at the New England Hospital to have more African American students admitted. The conference members responded by electing her to be association chaplain and giving her a lifetime membership.

He joined the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, an independent black denomination first established in New York City, which counted among its members Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman. He became a licensed preacher in 1839, which helped him to hone his oratorical skills.

Many people believed slaves were highly uneducated and considered them useless. Douglass changed this perspective through his autobiographies that he wrote. He showed that slaves are intelligent and it was merely an excuse used to hold black people in a low position. Douglass was very outspoken and gave many speeches about abolishing slavery in the United States. He was utilized as an example of how anyone could be intelligent if given the tools to and that slavery was a method to prevent blacks from progressing in the U.S.

Showing just how great of a man he was, Douglass eventually met backup with his original owner on his death bed and reconciled which he said gave him peace.

Frederick Douglass was an important part of history because he proved everyone wrong and he consistently challenged the views of America in a way no other black man has before.

Over the course of his two-decade career, actor Chadwick Boseman won numerous honors, including two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Golden Globe Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a nomination for an Academy Award. His leading part in Black Panther is what made him most famous.

Boseman has given young Black kids a Black superhero to aspire to be like. Boseman went above and beyond to ensure that his African ancestry was respected in the movie, battling for the right accent for his role, T'Challa. He sought to emphasize the diversity of Black culture instead of allowing stereotypes of African culture to appear on screen, and as a result, the movie became a landmark.

She eventually teamed up with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and created the Seneca Falls Convention which was attended by hundreds of people including Frederick Douglass. Here she presented a Declaration of Sentiments which demanded not only rights for women but that the word "woman" be inserted into the Declaration of Independence and more importantly giving women the right to vote, which fueled the woman suffrage movement eventually. 

She and her husband also allowed their Philadelphia-area home to be a stop on the Underground Railroad, allowing slaves a place to hide and rest as they sought freedom. In 1866, Mott joined with Stanton, Anthony, and Stone to establish the American Equal Rights Association. The following year, the organization became active in Kansas where black suffrage and woman suffrage were to be decided by popular vote, and it was then that Stanton and Anthony formed a political alliance with Train, leading to Mott's resignation. Kansas failed to pass both referendums

What do you plan to do this weekend?

She is a spacecraft engineer for NASA’s signature space mission, the James Webb Space Telescope. As a spacecraft engineer an important part of her work is to test the ground systems that will command and control the telescope after it has been launched into space. The telescope is set to launch in 2021 and  will be used to discover new planets and the first stars after the dark ages.  The National Science Foundation awarded her a full college scholarship to the Capitol Technology University (CTU) in Laurel, MD.  Scarlin completed a internship at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, and by the age of 20, she was part of the ground control system team for the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite.  In 2013, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, but she found her real niche in Astronautical Engineering.  After graduation, Scarlin was the mission planning lead for the TRMM mission before transferring to work on the James Webb Space Telescope mission.

Six feet tall, with a powerful voice and driven by deep religious conviction, Truth was an ardent abolitionist and women’s rights activist. Among many of Truth’s legacies, the tone and substance of her language loom large. She stumped the country speaking on emancipation, politicians, political action, racism, women’s rights and segregation.

Perhaps her best-known speech was the stirring “Ain’t I a Woman?” delivered at a women’s convention in Ohio in 1851. When Truth died in 1883, her funeral in Battle Creek, Michigan was the largest the town had ever seen, a testimony to how her heroic and courageous life touched so many around her.
