The birth of the Byzantine Empire, as an offshoot of the Roman power that was created in Constantinople, is considered to be in tandem with the Christian religion coming into power. Interestingly, the people who are often credited with founding the Byzantine identity, Constantine and Justinian, are not the ones who shaped the empire as we know it today. In fact, Heraclius, the person who is likely to be responsible for the creation of what we know as Byzantine identity, is thought to have been the person who founded the structure of the Byzantine theme.

The creation of the theme marks the Golden Age of Greek identity within the empire and helps to shape other infrastructural and societal changes that lead to the short-term survival of the Arab threat on Constantinople and the long-term success of the empire as a whole.

The power of the Byzantine Empire truly existed in religion, so much so that the idea of religion helped preserve the survival of Constantinople on multiple occasions. Christianity helped to preserve the Greek identity in Constantinople and helped to preserve, in my opinion, the greatest empire to grace the earth.
