I believe that history can’t be defined. When you look at both sides of the same coin you are left stuck in between points of view. When you say history is science you are saying all of history’s events happened. And there's no way of saying the Aztecs ruled Mexico or the cause of Napoleon lost in Waterloo. You are only relying on architecture and diaries or books with the point of view of a person. So there is no possible way of telling what happened in old history events. (Without a time machine of course) So you could also say it’s an art. A form to communicate with people in the future perhaps. But in my point of view, art is a way to express yourself just like Lincoln’s letters. Now many historical events could be ways to express yourself. So why isn’t history art, because it’s not all expressions, there’s also knowledge and ideas behind events. 
So as everything in life you need to see the 2 points of view to understand to the fullest anything that crosses your path. 
That’s why I think history can’t be defined as a science or an art. History has many different meanings. I believe that, even though it is the past in theory, it can be described as life. Not all of history can be remembered, not all of history can be recovered. Before there were texts, people would tell stories and keep track verbally, which wasn't very efficient. I believe that history is like life, because we don't know what is a lie and what isn't, we just trust from what has been written. How do we know that Alexandre the Great really was that great? How do we know that ancient Egyptians believed in multiple gods? We are just inferring as we go along, taking educated guesses on what MAY be. History isn't one thing, it's many different perspectives, just like life. How do we REALLY know if the Nazi's were in the wrong? How do we know Stalin wasn't doing a bad thing putting people in gulags? Nazi Germany truly became the strongest Germany has ever been. Soviet Russia was also very powerful, even with its flaws. Important events, important people get forgotten throughout history, just like people now and events now. To me history is more than just what happened in the past. To me history is the examination of the past and taking bits of info from lots of different people and connecting them to each other and figuring out the whole truth. To me History is carefully examining things that happened in the past and seeing how these events come together and shape our present how they might affect our future
