ערב מלחמת העולם הראשונה  היו יריבויות פוליטיות בין המדינות וחששות של מדינות לפגיעה בריבונותם וביטחונם מצד מדינות שכנות. 
בשנת 1871 אוחדה גרמניה.  גרמניה פונה לאוסטרו הונגריה ועשתה איתה ברית צבאית, תוך 3 שנים הצטרפה לברית גם איטליה. ברית זו נקראה הברית המשולשת. ההסכמה הייתה שאם רוסיה תתקוף את אחת מהן הן יבואו לעזרתה.


בחרנו בתמונה זו מפני שהיא מתארת בצורה הטובה ביותר את חלוקת המעצמות לבריתות.

When he grew up, he looked for his biological family.
