While I was looking around for vegetation a forager may be interested in, I came across this giant yucca, Yucca gigantea. Found naturally in Mexico and Central America, these plants are said to reach 30 feet high on average and have the ability to withstand drought. The petals are used for seasonal cooking. Some say the taste is in between asparagus and artichoke. All parts of the plant are edible, sparingly, and the roots can be used as a soap.

A kumquat is a small citrus fruit. It is about the size of an olive, with a bright orange skin and a tart, tangy flavor. Unlike most citrus fruits, the skin of a kumquat is edible and is often used in recipes or as a garnish. Kumquats can be eaten whole or sliced, and are often used in jams, marmalades, and other desserts.

But as I started to look closer in plants and bushes I found a mint plant by a fence! Mint is so versatile it can be used to make tea, in salad, pasta, sauces, it’s kind of like a seasoning/spice as it can add a taste to another food. You can also just eat mint straight from the plant! I used to eat mint as a kid because I thought it was fun to eat plants in the wild! It was nice to go back to that feeling and realize now that I was foraging!

It is a thin-shelled black crab that loves being on the volcanic rock at the beach on the island. They move so fast that I couldn't capture them on camera and it makes me wonder the skills ancient Hawaiians used to catch these fast and tiny crabs. A local once told me that I could just grab one and pop it in my mouth. Part of our job is giving an "eco tour" and I've learned so much about the forests and what they have that are of benefit. The picture above is one of many. This in particular is called "Minor's Lettuce." It takes just like lettuce but even better! The stem is a little sour but the rest of it is very flavorful. We like to pick these and make our own tossed salad!

I went on a trip to a couple cities there and EVERYWHERE I went, you would find rambutan trees sprouting sweet mamon. When the rainy season starts, all of the lower elevations will be splurged with rambutan trees blooming fresh mamon. These fruits can be picked off the tree and eaten very easily after cracking open the spiky looking shell it has. Don't be fooled by its appearance though, they're sweet as can be!

There are a ton of these in Hawaii, except these ones are clearly not ripe yet, unless you use them now to make a green papaya salad. Those are pretty good. Papayas are super good for the digestive system, helps breakdown food and has a bunch of enzymes as well. So, if you see one try it out they're pretty good.

It could be different varieties: strawberry, pineapple, and the one on the picture is "classic pink". Guava is a common tropical fruit native to Mexico, Central and South America, Caribbeans. It deserved to be called a "golden fruit" since it has a high nutrition value. Carbs, sugars, fiber , fat, proteins, Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, C,K, minerals, name it! Guava fruit has it all! What's more, guava leaves are used as an herbal tea and the leaf extract as a supplement. Amazing fruit that could benefit our community as a tasty, healthy snack and medicine.

The nature in this area was incredible, and the animals and greenery were abundant. One specific memory I have from the first summer living there was picking blackberries off of bushes which were on the side of the road, then bringing them back to my mom who used them to make delicious pies. It was a great experience as I had previously lived in a city, where there were scarce wild fruits around to collect. Additionally, these berries were some of the sweetest I had ever tasted -- they were nothing like the ones you buy in the store!

While running, I saw a beautiful lemon tree with lush green leaves and yellow fruit hanging from its branches. I love lemon trees for their bright and fresh aroma, but I don't have the place to take care of one myself.

I'm from a really rural town in NorCal, and my sister and I would spend a lot of time going up and down our street picking huckleberries and blackberries. I hate berries so I never ate them, but we would make pies and bring them to our neighbors.

Working with my dad in landscaping, we come across lots of orange trees. I feel like oranges would be perfect food for foragers to grow since they not only provide them as a source of food but could also be used as hydration. Also, it's my favorite fruit!

Avocados are very healthy snacks that I, personally, have been trying to eat more of for its numerous nutritional benefits. It is a great source of carbs and fats (the good kinds) as well as proteins and fiber. It is also very low in sodium and saturated fats (the bad kind). Avocados are also locally sourced and quite common. All-in-all, they would make for a great food to forage.
