Reflections

DL DAV Model School, Shalimar Bagh, India
"Life always gives us exactly the teacher we need at every moment whether either in a form of mosquito, human, misfortune, loss, breath, or garbage, etc. as all of these constitute to be our teacher at some point or the other", says Joko Beck. This platform is one of those teachers who taught us and, successfully, made us learn as well as understand what is collaboration, cooperation, sharing, exchange of perceptions, fellowship. And, How to manage group tasks. Students who were not known to any software learnt to operate them well.
Of course, this gave rise to e-Sharing of ideas, projects, culture, festivals, etc. constituting/resulting in enhanced learning, which is very much effective for distant deliberations and discussions.
It's a tri-school (schools settled at the opposite ends of the globe) joint venture , which has glaringly developed new amiable and playful relations among the teammates.
Yes,cultural exchange definitely took place as we were constantly updating our fellow members about our festivals as well they were doing, whether it was Thanksgiving, Diwali, Holi, Christmas. Festivals remind us of Ms. Janet Barnstable ( GVC Program Manager) who always shared some posts for the commemoration of festivals. We're greatly grateful to her to keep us engaged.
Certainly, we're already selecting a few more members (new) for the next venture as we may not have some of them with us next year due to their final year of school. This competition is no cumbersome, rather a timing filling and gainful activity to pursue which we would like all the students of our school to contribute to( or, participate in) if they are interested in any work pertaining web-designing. We'd love to this opportunity again and again. With the guidelines of our mentors- Mrs. Vandana Aneja and Mrs. Shruti Aggarwal Verma we are here with this website made out of our best efforts. Also, contribution and support of our co-schools and their respective teachers is inevitable.Lastly, we would like to quote what we liked throughout this event, it's the freedom of choice of what we want to include and select for our website. We were not interrupted with anything. Fortunately, we don't find anything unlikable regarding such an event. -Written by Divya Batra (DL DAV Model School, Shalimar Bagh, India)

Reflections

I learned that other countries have different ways to communicate than the United States. The thing that I liked the most was getting together with friends to come up with ideas for the website. I would do it again because it was a great experience to learn about other countries and staying fit.
By: Julia

I did not make any new friends because I really didn't talk to anyone that much, but I am sure if I did I would make a new friend! No, I would not like to do a project like that again because I personally think that it was not fun. And last but not least, I did not learn that much about other cultures.

By: Adam

Doing this Edmodo website was super fun. I learned that not all counties have the best computer connection. The thing I liked the most was hanging out with my friends while working on the project. I really wanted to learn about another culture, but they could not respond as much. I would do this project again if I could.

By: Caroline T.

I learned that technology can have many more effects on people than I ever thought. I think that I got better at working together with other people. I don’t understand any other cultures because our partners weren't as active as we hoped. I liked that I didn't have to do it alone.

By: Patrick

In the healthy lifestyle project, I learned how to make surveys by using a website called www.surveymonkey.com. In other countries, some people do not have access to many resources as other people do. I liked how I got to meet new people from a different country and working with my friend Kyle on the survey part of the healthy lifestyle project. It was hard, but it was worth it.

By: Gabe

When we did this project I knew it wasn't going to be easy. One of our partners didn't get a chance to work with us, and we didn't learn much about their culture! It was also a challenge because our other partners had a hard time connecting through the internet, and we had a tough time communicating. I learned that not everything is going to be easy in situations like this, especially when you are working with people from around the world! Besides all the hard times, I had fun, and I really want to get a chance to do this project next year!

By: Tyla

In the healthy lifestyle project I learned that some schools don’t have as many good resources as we have. If I had the chance to do this project again, I would. I did like that we worked with partners from a different country. I think that this project encouraged me to be healthier than I am. That is my reflection of this project.

By: Caroline

In this Healthy Lifestyle project I learned how to work as a team with other people. I wasn’t able to understand another culture better because the people we worked with couldn’t get in touch with us. What I liked about the project is that we had to work harder than anything else we did this school year. If I had a chance to do it again I would because it was a new experience. That is why I liked that project.

By: Matthew

I learned that schools in other countries learn about different things then we do. I also learned that in schools in the other countries they aren’t as lucky as us to have the resources we have. If I had the choice to do it again I would pick yes. We made healthy posters, and we also made a video including exercising, sleeping, and eating healthy. I hope we can do it again and again.

By: Peter

During the Edmodo project, we got to take videos, pictures, and have buddies from Russia. It was really fun because I never did this before. When I heard that we had buddies from Russia, it was like my mom telling me we were going to Disney World. I would do anything to do this again soon. We didn’t do this to win the contest. We did it because we wanted to have fun and try something new. We met some great people, and that is what made this experience worth it!

Thank you

By: Olivia

During Edmodo I did many things. Sure our partners weren't as active as we wanted, but we had fun and tried really hard. I learned that some countries and states don't have as many resources as we do, and we are very lucky for that. Even though that is true we still had a blast making our projects!
Even though it didn't quite go as we had hoped, I still had quite some fun, and it was even better with my best friend Jaclyn! When she came over we started *working*. By working I mean having fun messing up in our video, then playing a little basketball, then messing up again, then hula hooping. We even got to dance in the middle of the living room. Even though I wanted to learn about Thailand and Russia, I still had bunches of fun and hard work.
I loved doing this project especially with my best friend. I hope to do this next year. Yeah, it wasn't easy, but I'm up for a good challenge.

By: Rylee

I learned so much from The Healthy Lifestyle Project! I didn't make any new friends due to technical difficulties, though I did have one of my best friends by my side! I would love to do this project again and again. Now I will try as much as I can to stay fit and happy for the rest of my life!

By: Jaclyn

I learned some things are healthier than others. Also, I learned other countries may not have as good stuff as us, so it’s okay if they might not respond sometimes. I want to do this next year. It was very fun, and I want to do it on another subject too. My favorite part was doing all the research and typing it. I loved doing this, and again, I hope we do this next year. That’s my reflection on Edmodo!

By: Dylan

From our survey I learned that lots of students like fruits and vegetables. My partner Gabe and I loved doing this report together and were happy to be partners. I also learned that other schools have fewer supplies than our school, and we feel really bad. I would do this again because my best friend and I loved doing it together. I hopefully will stay healthy for the rest of my life because of my knowledge of what eating fruits and vegetables do for you.

I liked making the survey and asking people questions because it showed me how kids cared about being healthy. I hope we can do this over and over again!

By: Kyle

Doing this project I learned more about the culture in Russia. I made new friends and had a lot of fun. It was hard to talk to our partners because they didn’t have the same technology. But I still loved this project. I hope I can do this project again and make more friends!

By: Emily

I like doing the healthy lifestyle project because it brings two different cultures together, and we get to learn about each other. It's actually really fun and educational too. I wish that someday I get to do this project again.

By: Ava

In this project our class (Mrs. Kirk's class) did a lot of healthy things! But I learned that not everything is healthy.

During the project, I made three new friends! Their names are Kate, Julia, and Jenae. They were very fun to work with, and I hope that it could be the same group next time!

I think I would do this project 50 more times! This project was filled with excitement, joy, and much more.

By: Anuja

Aside from learning what foods are healthy and what foods are not, I learned a lot. One thing I learned is that other countries don’t have as good electronic resources as we do. I would do it again. I would also like to work with Mathew and Peter again. So, if we can do it again, “yes” is my answer.

By: Alex

I thought that the Edmodo project was very fun. But the bad part about it is that our partners didn’t have great Internet connection, so they couldn’t help us with the project that well. Because of that, I didn’t learn anything about Russia or Thailand. The only thing that I learned was that they have very poor Internet connection, especially in Thailand. But lJJk on the bright side, I still got to have a lot of fun with my friends, learn more about eating healthy, and make my first website! I loved the Edmodo project, and I would do it again if I could!

By: Kate

I learned new things like some other places don't have as good technologies as us. I really liked making a video with my group in my class. Yes, if I had the opportunity to do this again, I would. I would have loved to learn more about another culture, but unfortunately it didn't work out as well as we wanted it to.
By: Jenae

I like the project that we did because it was fun. I learn that not everything is healthy. My teacher is so much fun because she let us do that project. We also worked with groups. My group was Tyla and Caroline C. We did a healthy video. I also would like to do the project again. It was very fun. Thanks to Mrs. Kirk.

By: Alexa

I do not want to do this project again because it gives you stress and too much thinking about paragraphs and healthy activities. That's a lot of work to do if you get two assignments that are due on the same day. I would not like to do this project again because you meet new people that you may not know and never get to see.

By: Aidan

I really liked our topic this year. I thought that there was a lot we could do with it. We already had so many activities at our school that fit in with our healthy lifestyles topic because our physical education teacher really promotes health and fitness at our school. The students had a lot of fun creating videos and taking pictures. It was also great to see them build friendships with students in the class that they may not have really talked to before.

The challenge was that this year we struggled to communicate with our partners and ended really doing the project alone. We never heard from our partners in Thailand at all and really lost touch with our partners in Russia until we had basically finished the project. I think this took a lot of the excitement out of the project for my students because they really wanted to communicate and learn about these new cultures.

By: Mrs. Kirk

How can we change attitudes/behavior? Shared values are a key ingredient to fostering peace. Shared values can include corporations, people, religion, communities, business disciplines, cities and countries all working together for the good of the Earth. We met many students from India and Egypt and had the opportunity to learn more about them and their concerns. We learned patience and understanding and gained experience in collaboration.
Keegan: We believe that we can make things better. We have the power to change the Earth. Sadly we are not doing that. Countries are fighting over land, religious views, and resources.

REFLECTIONS: KULACHIANS
"It was a matter of pride for me to get the power of compiling the website together from my school's side. But with power, comes responsibilities. It was a wonderful learning experience, wherein I learnt the skills of teamwork, leadership and time management. The best part was when I did not know how to add something to the website, but after several minutes of brainstorming, I got it. It was such a moment of pride and achievement for me.It was great to do something so knowledgeable, wherein I not only learnt about different sports across the world, but also honed my life skills, and learnt some additional activities such as making a site, creating beautiful images on my own, or making a mind-map. GVC has given me a new vision, a better outlook towards life, and hone my social, technical, emotional and internal character. I was among the few lucky members of GVC, and hope that my dedication towards my duties has paid off."-K. R. SwathiLead Co-ordinator of Website team, KHMS

"I was very happy to know that I had been selected for GVC among thousands of other students studying in my school. I was glad to be entitled with the job of website designing. Being at the final level of the hierarchy of the website making, I had numerous responsibilities. It was so much fun to fulfill all these responsibilities one by one. I learned the use of Photoshop, Movie maker, as well as several of the Google tools. It was amazing to compile the website together. "
-Harshit GoyalCo-ordinator of Website team, KHMS
Working in the designing team has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. I've learnt about the four Cs which we had kept at the pinnacle in our Code of Conduct- Creativity, Collaboration, Co-operation and Co-ordination. I also feel mesmerized when I get to know that we students are adding a global dimension to teaching. Collaborating to two other schools, working as a team is surely a herculean task. Howsoever, it gave has given me the opportunity to broaden my technical skills. Being a co-ordinator, I kept the code of conduct in mind 24*7. My favourite part of keeping an account of the whole progress and sharing it with the world. Glad I had been given the opportunity to do so. "
-Ishita BanatiLead Co-ordinator of Designing team, KHMS
"I saw the album of the famous sports persons around the world. I was very happy to note that our world is faring so well in the field of sports. Be it the field of Cricket, Hockey, Badminton, Soccer, Chess, Billiards, or Squash, the sports persons from around the world are shining in all fields. It has made me take pride in my country and my world."
-Rashi JainMember of Designing team, KHMS
"Sports and games have enthralled me since the age of two. I have always been an avid sports lover. But there are several facts about sports which I had not known before. I became glad to know that one of my favourite recreational games, Ludo, has developed from an Indian game, Pachisi. Overall, the website has enhanced my knowledge."-Kritika GumberMember of Information team, KHMS
"I was most glad to be a part of GVC1419. This platform gave me a new outlook towards life and sports. I thought that sports are a mere recreation and gave more importance to academics. But the website changed my perception, and prompted me towards playing more sports. Now I have started giving equal importance towards academics and sports."-Sanchit TyagiCo-ordinator of Information team, KHMS

"I strongly feel that although the sports at the global level are improving, but people are actually not understanding the main objective of sports. The values of discipline, sportsmanship and team-spirit are lacking among sports persons. People now focus more on winning, rather than enjoying the fun of participation, and sometimes, even resort to malpractices to win a championship. I think that if a sports person's root values are finely built up, only then will he be able to achieve something big in his field. Thus, the focus of all teachers must be to build and strengthen the value system of children."
-Ms. Neeru KhullarSports Teacher, KHMS

"While working with my students as a mentor for GVC contest, I have evolved as a better teacher. From the day of inception of idea, when our school Principal Ms. Sneh Verma asked me to participate in the event, till the integration of last minute changes on the website, it was an enjoyable learning journey. Working with a team of 40 students, giving them guidelines to work in an online environment following digital ethics was quite challenging and enriching experience. GVC contest enhanced 21st century skills of students viz. creativity, communication, critical thinking, collaboration and ICT Skills. Connecting with partner school students and teachers Ms. Natalie and Mr. Jon was a great experience. I express my gratitude to Ms. Janet Barnstable, Program manager of GVC contest for her consistent support and guidelines. Best wishes to everyone for future !"
-Ms. Rashmi KathuriaISA Co-ordinator, KHMS

"I think that having theoretical knowledge of a particular subject is not enough. I feel that the practical knowledge of an information is also necessary. After watching their website, now I can say that students have applied their knowledge in the right way. Best wishes to the team."
-Ms. Yashu ChhabraSupervisory Head, KHMS

"Providing an opportunity to students for becoming a global digital citizen is a key requirement as per the current education scenario. As a school leader, I want all my students to get an exposure to new technologies, and Global Virtual Classroom Contest is one such competition which has helped students in enhancing ICT skills and life skills as well. I congratulate Program Manager, Ms. Janet Barnstable, for providing support and guidance. I applaud the efforts of mentors Ms. Natalie Capps, Mr. Jon Barber and Ms. Rashmi Kathuria for being there with the students for accomplishing their journey. I wish good luck to GVC team from KHMS, India and WMS, USA for all success."
-Ms. Sneh VermaPrincipal, KHMS
REFLECTIONS: WALTON MIDDLE SCHOOL

"Around the world, sports are used to connect with other countries and cultures. International competitions such as the World Cup and the Olympics often use elements from different cultures within their games. The rules for the games are universally recognized. Many sports have international committees or boards that work together to make decisions regarding the sport. People on sports teams often form close bonds with each other because they learn to work together as a team.Sports can make the world a better place. Skills learned in sports are often applicable to life. When playing sports, people learn life skills like how to work with others, how to achieve a goal, and how to lose gracefully. All of these skills are needed in day-to-day interactions with others. In general, we can learn a lot from observing the actions of sports teams. When playing on a team, a player’s background does not matter. All that matters about the player is that they are a good teammate. The world we live in would be a better place if we showed that much tolerance towards others. Sports teach collaboration by having the players all work together to achieve a common goal. Our relations with other countries could be stronger if we collaborated toward common goals, such as ending hunger or achieving peace."
--Grace H, Student, Walton Middle School

"Walton students enjoyed connecting with partner schools using Edmodo. Many of them turned to the forum for personal connections, sharing details about daily life and interests rather than solely focusing on the competitive side of the project. As a teacher, I loved seeing my students engaged with learning tasks that went beyond state testing protocols and the basic-level requirements they often face in the public school setting. Being able to learn about peers in another country, and to see how similar our lives can be, is the most valuable lesson these young adults can learn."
--Natalie M.
