The dombra is a beloved instrument in Kazakh culture, and over time, various types have developed, each with unique characteristics that enhance its sound and versatility. Some common types of dombyra:

Ushem dombra – This is a three-stringed version of the traditional dombra. The extra string provides more musical flexibility, allowing for more complex melodies and harmonies. It is often used in ensemble performances or for playing more dynamic and intricate pieces.

Tört shekti dombra – With four strings, this type of dombra can produce a richer and more nuanced sound. The additional strings enable musicians to play a wider range of notes and create more intricate compositions, blending traditional dombra music with modern techniques.

Zhelbezekti dombra – This dombra is recognized by its decorated headstock, which often features carved or painted designs. Its unique structure may also influence its tone, making it stand out both visually and musically. This type is popular in performances where both the instrument's sound and appearance are emphasized.

Shynkyldek dombra– This smaller-sized dombra has a high-pitched, delicate sound. Its size makes it ideal for lighter musical compositions or for younger players who are just starting to learn the instrument. It is often associated with more playful or softer music, making it a favorite for teaching children or for performances that require a gentle sound.

Ush shekti dombra – Another three-stringed variation of the dombra, this type is used for playing more complex musical pieces. The third string allows for more tonal variety, giving musicians the ability to produce a wider range of melodies and harmonies.

These various types of dombra showcase the instrument's adaptability in Kazakh music. Whether used in traditional folk songs, modern compositions, or educational settings, each type brings a unique flavor to Kazakh music, reflecting the richness of the country's cultural heritage.
