1. Procedure

Step 1: Start off with all the materials you will need.

Step 2: Place the flask onto the scale and make sure to write down the weight of it. Once you are done, "zero" out the scale and add 1-2 grams of NaCl. You may also want to measure the beaker and the watch glass.

Step 3: Measure 25 mL of water in the graduated cylinder.

Step 4: Pour the water into the beaker and stir until the salt is fully dissolved.

Step 5: Pour the salt and water solution into the beaker.

Step 6: Place the watch glass over the beaker.

Step 7: Carefully place the beaker onto the heating plate. Wait until the water is fully evaporated.

Step 8: Using the rubber tongs, take the beaker off of the heating plate.

Step 9: Wait until the beaker is cool enough the touch.

Step 10: Measure the beaker and the watch glass.

Step 11: Do the percent error calculations.

The main reason why our results stayed positive was the amount of salt that still stayed in the beaker or on the watch glass.

The main reason why our results were negative was because some salt came out when the water was evaporating.

We feel like critical thinking was addressed in this activity. We had to use our own knowledge and actually think and come up with hypothesizes on why we were getting more salt or why we were losing salt. We developed educated opinions and guesses as to why those things occurred in this activity.
