UD: Current events - need to correct narrow perspectives; make connections of windows/mirrors; show similarities in settings (OMAM); Foreign language - go to local neighborhoods to make it a friendlier, accessible experience to practice language.
Outside the classroom: Students come from all neighborhoods; Old Woman was not afraid to connect with others - so easy to feel fearful. Some kids have never taken the subway - they need to make connection. Can't judge just by appearance or media. Helps students realize that can find as much fulfillment in simple things, what is around them in the present. Some students are always busy, entertained - never ground themselves in silence, peace. Great joy in helping out at food pantry. Inspiration for service/learning -- great way to prepare for Allston Brighton. The generational relationship is also powerful - the grandmother opens awareness, broadens outlook.
