How does theatre engage an audience? by Sarah Macdonald

While watching the performance today, consider why/how it engages you as an audience. Think about the age group this appeals to. Why/how? If this was performed to an Elementary audience, what might they have to change? How does theatre differ from television shows/movies?

From the trailer, I can see that it is a musical? The also put a lot of detail and time into the costumes. It is also clear that they practiced and rehearsed a lot. There is a narrator, which will help you follow a long to the plot. The people are super in sync, which sounds great. They are also really good singers. I wonder how the witch was floating. I like how the acts all connect in the end. When the characters meet, they interact well and they also have memorised their lines. The elements of drama:
Space
Convention
Rhythm and timing
Symbol
Contrast
All these help the play move along and look good.

What doesn't happen in real life?
Singing randomly about how you feel. Dancing. People singing the same song as you. Flying. A narrator narrating people's stories.
Voices out of nowhere.

Why/how did it engage me?
It engages me because there's a plot to it where people act but also people sing. They sometimes all stop after they sing and it looks like they are frozen. It engages me because the costumes look pretty realistic. Some of the songs are funny if you listen to it or look at what's happening.

If it was performed for an elementary audience what might they change?
Maybe less things going on at once because it's a little bit hard to know who they're talking about. Jokes. It's a little creepy and scary so maybe a little less. It's a little bit confusing because it's a little fast.

How does theatre differ from television?
It is different because theatre is when people act at that spot instead of acting behind a camera and after that people see it from behind a television, computer or at a cinema.

What happens in real life?
The personalities are very humanly like like us. They have a lot of feelings to how we would really act to people and scenarios we would be. If you let down your hair and someone pulls it it hurts. They talk to each other like they are and they act with each other like they would have to in real life.

Comparison:
They have more background decorations.

How are they using space?
They part it so then a lot of things can happen at once. They also have a ground floor and a higher level so then different stories can go on.

Conventions:
The narrator lip syncing with an actor. Everyone frozen but only one character is moving.

Rhythm & Timing
The lyrics are sometimes off but then it goes back in. People in the back behind the witch they had to go back at the right time because they were scared.

Symbol:
Tree - life
Tears - sadness

What doesn't happen in real life?

They sing what they say the whole time, and they act and dance while telling a story. Also like real life things like seats float and there is witches. Also everything is coordinated and together too well. There is also a narrator.

What is different from TV/etc?

They are singing and dancing in front of you, like in front of you as in you can touch them if you can/want to. Also in TV or movie, there might be filters or Computer graphic but theatre doesn’t have those stuff because it’s not filmed.

What makes you engaged +why?

How they sing(songs) and how you can see what is happening (whole thing). The costumes and props. Also how the prop is used like floating seats. There’s many characters.

Age group it appeals too+why?

I think the age group might start from Middle school or so because from Middle school you will understand what is going on better, and also some unique sarcasm and humour.

If it was for elementary what do they need to change?

I think it might be hard to understand what’s happening because there is multiple things happening at once. Also maybe make some things more easy to understand like what they are saying, and make things a little more childish because they might be scared.

I also saw that people singing on beat . That is very un- regular!! Some other things that is un realistic is the eyesight of the actor . You don't always look in front.

Actual performance (something that look un realistic)
As iI say it is unusual that peoples singing on the beat randomly. Also some of the thing does look un realistic for example there is a big tree, like does it look real?

Something that is realistic?
But something that looks real for me is that talking between the actors. Also the actors looks at the people when they speak.

How are they using the space?
They are using the space wisely and when they have to change the layout they make the light sight small and then the other people change the layout.

How about the convention?
The narrater Singer Backgrounder Sound affect staffs that makes up the settings.

How and why does it help to the actor saying and acting on the rhythm?
It helps know the reaction time when they needed to react and say. Also the rhythm helps because you could also know the time when the light flashes.
The rhythm also could make the audience have the same empathy as the characters.

How does theatre differ from television?

It is different because first, they don't have any zoom and also the sound could be quite far. Also it could have more impact if you are in the theatre.

Setting
the setting have to be realistic so the audience gets sucks in the movie.

Hand movements
It could make the audience have a better knowledge about what is happening and the audience could have more impacts.

Which one do I think was better??

I think the first one is better because the lighting was awesome and the first one was easier to understand. Also I liked the affect of the lighting and the voice. I think they are very acting well . I didn't like the second one because it looked un realistic. For example the wolf in the first one it was scary and it had a mask on. But the second one it was just make ups and it was making the audience laugh. But the second one they have stronger voice. But against the first one have younger actor. Also I didn't like the actor always acting in the same place.

Symbolization
The 2 branches was symbolizing the birds
Also the troll doll was representing / symboling Rapunzel.

Teaser: The teaser engaged me because they sing a lot which doesn't happen that much in real life. The props also make it more eye catching too. Their makeup is also really complicated which makes it also eye catching even if it's creepy.

The broadway part:
They sing a lot and their costume is really good because it's complicated and detailed. They also make some lyrics of the song rhyme so it's like a rap sometimes which is pretty cool. The props are also really detailed and they have lots of props too that they use.

The Story:
There is about 3 or 4 stories at the same time which I think is interesting. And I also think all the stories match with each of the stories.

The sound:
They project their voice a lot and the sound effects in the background is good and relatable to the scenes and parts.

The second part
voice: they project

space how are they using the space?
They use all the structures for houses and that's basically how they move and use all the space.
