Reveal 3: Respecting Cultural Health Practices by Sorina Neang Long

Healing and health practices differ amongst cultures and people not only across the world, but even within different local communities. As health is not merely just the absence of disease, but the state of physical, mental, and social well-being, it is important to respect cultural health practices that differ from the biomedical western model of medicine.

This article illustrates that it is possible to still be respectful of cultural practices that patients perform and receive while also providing effective treatment. Practices such as coining and cupping have been used for millenium even in ancient societies and thus concepts surrounding these practices are deeply embedded into cultures, making them significant to patients. A provider being uninformed about these practices and passing judgement on them without understanding treatment can make for a untrustworthy relationship between patient and provider.

Failing to do so would lead to erasure of valuable traditional knowledge and culture, and displace the trust of those who amy practice these cultural health traditions.
